Hi. Ana Marie Cox joins Katy and Cody to talk about House Republicans' attack on trans rights and centrist Democrats throwing the trans community under the bus. They also discuss Matt Gaetz withdrawing his name for Attorney General, Dr. Oz, Pete Hegseth, and how to talk with your Trumpy family over Thanksgiving (if at all).

Is there any hope that a new party will arise from these ashes?

Steve Snyder

Time for my weekly check-up with how the world is burning.

Steve Snyder

Ana said something that reminded me of a thought that occurred to me the other day when I was thinking back on my religious days. To a neutral logic based observer, the actions of a “true believer“ and a psychopath are virtually indistinguishable.

A deradicalization episode/show would be cool. *still listening *

Unfortunately, from what I've read Gaetz only resigned from this sessions of congress and he was elected for the 2024 session so he'll just be resworn in. Unless he was promised to be Rubio's replacement in the Senate in exchange for stepping away from being AG.

Tim Walz wants to feed kids in the US, but he doesn't seem to care one iota about Israel starving millions.

I think we should do the Teresa May - cabbage test for a lot of these appointees. The turn over in Trump1 was breathtaking, and it'll only get worse in Trump2.

Sam Larson

I think Ana Marie overstates the importance of the backfire effect.

Man, it sure sucks that our only two options are Radical Extremist Republican, and Republican Lite. I keep hearing that Republican Lite needs to go even more extreme to the right to win elections, but that just sounds to me like a great way convince even more liberals to not show up to the polls.

I'd like to add another angle for the McBride situation: as a leader of this country, there are sacrifices she needs to make. I'm not saying that this particular issue is the one she needs to stand firm against; as y'all point out, she has to pick and choose, and that's one of the things we elected her for: to decide which battles to fight and how. But the fact remains that her actions reflect upon others and send a message about priorities. We need someone stand up and tell the fascists in government that their bullshit won't be tolerated.

Kev Bednarz

That was a fantastic conversation. Thanks y'all!!!

This one is also not pushing to the patreon rss, is there a chance that whatever the problem was with the last episode is also a problem on this one?

The Boustrophedonist Bricoleur

No, Katy, the ACA (Obamacare) wasn’t radical. It was invented by the Right, largely to forestall things like Single Payer. Now, agree with it or nor, Single Payer and other forms of tax-subsidized national health services ARE radical—at least in the US. I think we see here again an example of Leftists perfectly willing to move toward the Right, increasingly normalizing through what is said in words the Right-wing point of view.

Anyone else notice that this episode didn't go to the podcast feed?

Marie Strange

Does anyone know what organizations are helping people get their passports changed?

Micaela Godfrey

FYI, from another podcast's patreon: Hey all! It looks like Patreon changed their settings and now requires us to opt in to adding audio posts to the RSS feed instead of doing it automatically. What a way to learn about that change! Seems y'all gotta opt in to it doing the rss feed thing again. 😣
