I work with a separate and distinct Cody Johnston in Ottawa, Canada, to add to your list of same name people.

27:18 is such a mask off moment. A South Park "THIS IS WHAT RICH WHITE SUBURBANITES ACTUALLY BELIEVE" moment. Christ Almighty. I was a Google employee when the attempted YouTube shooting occurred a few years back (not in that office though). I distinctly remember we didn't change policies to address the shooter's grievances; which are the same grievances shared by large YouTubers — we instead locked down our own internal security. That's why I believe we won't learn anything from this shooting: we never have. I do love seeing everyone in the YouTube comments section of videos like Colbert's embarrassing disgrace of a tut-tut-ing just eviscerating these mainstream media chuds for demanding sympathy for the dead CEO and wanting the hero to be punished. So much unity and decency in *that place* is rare, and it must surely be more comments than a major network show has ever gotten like that...

Why does everyone keep citing the Joker? Joaquin Phoenix? I haven't seen it, admittedly. I'm a lite™ DC nerd, so this is weird.

Lots of heavy news from your beleaguered country, and I have nothing substantive to add except for this - Cody, that's a great shirt! As a guy who enjoys a nice plaid flannel button-down, I gotta say it's a great colour setup you have going on.

My good childhood friend is Katie Stohl. There are dozens of you ....DOZENS!

Hot take: I have no problem with vigilante justice. As a lawyer, I find it no less moral or just than our government control punitive system.

Policy wonks and the consultant class deserve a big chunk of the blame for where we are. Always obstructing real change

I love Jonathan's point about how we literally can't boycott healthcare companies, I'm not sure it's been put in that way for me before so thanks! I was talking to somebody about it and they were zoning in so much on the wealth inequality, and I'm like, most Americans don't seem to care that much about wealth inequality so much as they want to be on top of it, but *everyone* hates healthcare. and it is because we truly collectively can't escape it. the rest of the time everybody lives in such little isolated bubbles that all our suffering feels unique, but even relatively rich people can be devastated by the healthcare system. I think every other basic need (food shelter etc) relatively rich people can access reliably, so there is no class solidarity with people who can't afford food or whatever, they literally can't imagine starving, but almost everyone has been mortally wounded by health insurance. That's why developed capitalist countries with more foresight specifically socialized medicine, because what other system here can reliably hurt someone with $100,000 as much as they hurt someone with $0?

I know you are balanced, and fair, but i have read so many people on the left defending the murder of a human being, im afraid to watch because i might not want to come back afterwards :/

Thanks as always for your nuanced takes. This is why you're the first and only news podcast!

It's also very funny that the NYPD's reported budget in 2024 was $5.8 billion, more than the total budgets of several major cities, and all they did was wander around Central Park while some snitch at a McDonalds did their job.

The YouTube comments for this episode are... Interesting. So, so, so many bots. I wonder if the insurance industry is spinning up their astroturf machine.

When are we gonna get “Jonathan is also here” merch?!?

I was just fired from King County (WA) for being sick. "Non-disciplinary medical separation" they call it. I've been very sick with multiple doctors finding a variety of problems. Tumors, brain malformation, scarred lungs, and POTS. Ive had 14 anesthesia events in my life. 9 majors surgeries including one that saved my life and another that prevented kidney failure. I have lost my job so now i have a giant heap of problems that are debilitating with no insurance. The state insurance is effected by a change in income of $150 a month. In fuckin Seattle. The whole entire system is built for people who are not sick. I've become disabled. As one might expect it's taken a heavy toll on my mental health. The thing i did wrong was need medical attention after 9 years of public service.
