Why Spotify Is Bad For Music - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, and UNCENSORED

Thanks to the all powerful Cody for the showdie!

Miles Slade

Great ep as always. There's a no context swoosh sound at 8:37 that seems like it might be a mistake! Just a heads up

Pat Ron

Just bought my first digital album ever! (Edit: direct from artist) I'll probably still use a music steam platform for actual listening, but I will make more of an effort to buy digital albums from artists I like. I was under the impression that streaming platforms were supporting artists to some extent, so I am very happy to have been corrected on that.

I Swear A Lot

Mr. Shody, I appreciate and enjoy your in-depth and (team's) thorough investigations. Side note, I think T Swift and I would really hit it off. HOWEVER, we could all tell that this was shot at different times due to your hair with product and without. Cody, my dude, my brother my...lover?....you're better than this. (honestly just a shit post. Grateful for everyone's work on the showdy [except Warmbo])

Subscription cancelled, app deleted.

Willow Bee

Goddamnit. I loved Spotify

Gregory George Gillis

Love all the early/mid 2000s ska band references! Saw a few of those bands back then! We must be around same age. Less than Jake(HOB in Las Vegas around 2003), Voodoo Glow Skulls (Chain Reaction Anaheim '03 or '04), Goldfinger (I think Warped Tour around that same time).

Just out of curiousity, this raises questions I have w/ how compensation works for makers on YouTube when I pay for YouTube Premium. I mean, I get YouTube Music for free and all, but I primarily pay to avoid ad injection by YouTube. I'm guessing you all don't get a cut of that per month or should I just set up my PC to stream the Showdy all day in the background so you get a higher %?

This was terrific, but also horrible. Terrifible?? I really wasn't aware of how bad the Spotify rabbit hole was....I assumed, but to have it laid out in proper SMN fashion shed quite a light. Can't wait for this to go live so I can share it with everyone I know. Edit: bandcamp is my favorite. I can support artists directly, and their pay model isn't so bad. But they were recently bought by Epic Games. They'll probably ruin it.

I absolutely deleted my Spotify while listening. Now I'm looking for a competitor that doesn't also suck (not looking at you Amazon)

April Hughes

You didn't even skank, Cody.

Altinia Holdings Inc

Ha, the call to action and threat from Wormbo finally got me on the Patreon train. Maybe loud calls for support really work

Alec Ehrman

I guess patron and twitch (wait owned by amazon?) are okay if you enjoy psychostick or lords of the trident for some reason (which I do, not sure if much else is out there). Tidal at least you know Jay-z and Beyoncé get money.

CaptainJaka

You'd all better keep a better eye on your puppets. I'm threatened by enough muppets these days

peachfiend

So... Dave wrote all the ska jokes, yeah?

DreidelChamp

It's baffling to me how people worship at Joe Rogan's feet. He is a comedian first and foremost. Nothing he says should be taken seriously. It's all entertainment. He's doing what every other stand-up comedian does. He just happens to be the most popular. It's stupid to think that this guy is somehow a personality to listen to.

Rob Heller

Great as always. Nice to not hear Russia news every once in a while.

Memory Adams

Great video! Quite insightful.

The Voïd

I switched to Tidal and Overcast after this episode.

I thought the end comparison of Spotify to Napster was gonna end with “and you what platform actually functions more like that than any of the current streaming services? TikTok.” TikTok has done more for music discovery in the last few years than Spotify in their entire existence. Spotify is the reason entire Drake albums hit the Top 100 despite him putting as much effort into them as I do into self-care if I’m not going outside that day. TikTok inexplicably sent Fleetwood Mac back up the charts for a week, and also regularly boosts small indie/label-forsaken artists if their songs pop off on the app. It’s obviously got it’s own issues (as it turns out if all you need is 20 seconds of a song to be catchy the rest of it can suck ass and it will still be popular) but it’s probably the social media that has done the most for musicians in terms of exposure since the halcyon days of MySpace (Note: not saying all music “discovered” on TikTok is good, but it’s all better than another miserable Drake album on a platform that hates everyone who actually makes music)

The sad thing as an old guy is that most of my favorite artists are long dead, and aren't getting paid anyway. But all of this does remind me of the 70's where the big scandal was "Payola" with record labels bribing radio stations with cash and cocaine to play their artists. Ahh....(simpler?) times.

Okay okay I hate everything now are you happy SMN team???? Legit though thank you because I don't know how to find out what corporations are funding what foolishness. Blessings to those who can suss out shady dealings.
