Those of us who are neurodivergent are more than familiar with the way functioning language is used to demean, infantilize and dehumanize others. People throw around words, like “high-functioning” and “low-functioning,” as if they’re describing how close an AI is to passing the Turing test. To call someone “non-functional” because they have speech difficulties related to a stroke is the equivalent of calling them a broken machine. It’s a shame that a beloved neurotypical politician has to experience a stroke to wake people up to the ableism disabled people, such as myself, face every day.
