NOTE: This version does NOT have hardcoded subtitles (I couldn't find a version with them, unfortunately). So if you don't speak Spanish or know the film very well, you will have trouble following along. Just wanted to be upfront about that. But otherwise, subscribe or purchase to unlock!

Y'know, this was great Spanish listening practice! I do speak Spanish as a second language, but listening can still be difficult sometimes and it's not often I get to watch a movie without also reading lips as extra help. Just to give a little more historical context if you didn't already get it as the movie progressed, Spain was under the rule of dictator Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975. This movie is set during or just after the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s between basically socialist and fascist sides (sounds kinda familiar...), and although in the movie the socialist side has the victory for the battle, the war ultimately ended the other way and led to the eventual dictatorship. Following Franco's death in 1975, however, the successor he had been training (King Juan Carlos I) pulled a bit of a surprise maneuver and called for democratic reform instead of a continued dictatorship... Which is how we ended up with the democratic Spain that exists today! Glad you enjoyed this! What led to you wanting to watch it, if I might ask?

Thank you for the historical context! It's quite remarkable that someone was given the chance to have dictator levels of power and instead chose to give power to his people. I respect the hell out of that! Good on Juan for that. :) And I'm very glad you watched the reaction! I wasn't certain if a non-English film without subtitles would go over big with my viewer base, most of whom I assume don't speak Spanish. I was actually really bummed when I realized without hardcoded subtitles I couldn't turn it into an edited reaction for Youtube, so the fact you watched it makes me happy. Makes the almost 4 hours it took to render the video worthwhile! :) As for my motivation to watch: it's been on my list for a while (ever since I saw the trailer and found it intriguing). And it's a completely different genre from what I've covered on the channel so far, and figured it would be a good way to test the waters and see if could bring in some new subs interested in my commentary for dark fantasy, which is a genre I enjoy (it was one of my favorite genres to write as well!). That of course didn't work out due to the subtitle issue, but I'm still glad I watched it. An excellent film to be sure, brutal but darkly beautiful.
