Damo, you've also seen the actor who plays Boris (Stellan Skarsgard) in Good Will Hunting. He played the professor. Very talented actor.

Not to create a panic or anything- but I would urge anyone in the Patreon, and especially those based in or near to the Uk to go and have a little read up on Sellafield Nuclear in West Cumbria.

My friend worked on the Smoke Plume and the Helicopter falling! We had no clue what it was when it was in the studio or how well received it was going to become

Love your guys analysis and coming back to the very start of the show and Legasov's first words "What is the cost of lies?" It's something that I think about throughout each episode, so poignant and relevant far beyond the show

River was a great show! I rewatched it recently. I realllllllly enjoyed it.

Thank you! Yeah that line stuck with us, you see the cover up and the blame game happening in front of your eyes.

It's not 3 Roentgen, it's 15,000. My favorite line of the entire series. The scale of how devastating that sounds when even 3.6 was still enough to raise alarm in Legasov in the first episode.

I’m guessing you don’t hear this too often, but…thanks for the recommendation, Damo! 🤣 I hadn’t heard of “River”, but as you were talking about it, I looked it up and it’s on one of my streaming subscriptions. I’ll be watching it this week, it sounds like something I’d like.

Small point during the outro when you mentioned the Titanic not having enough lifeboats. It's something of a myth that the White Star Line was arrogant and didn't believe the ship could ever sink and that's why they didn't have enough lifeboats. They did realize the ship could sink but due to the watertight compartments it was assumed that the ship would sink slowly enough where the lifeboats they did have would serve as ferries to a rescue boat which could be hailed by radio (new technology at the time). In fact tragically there was a nearby liner the SS Californian that was only an hour away from the Titanic but did not end up going back to help rescue people. That whole part of the story is overlooked as most all of the people could and should have been saved even with the lack of enough lifeboats.

Julie A

Did you know that when you first watched it?

I remember when I first watched the show I was planning on going to bed at the end of this episode. When their lights went out and it went to black, I couldn't wait until the next night to watch it. I had to continue!

I swear Titanic has to be the first film where one of the guys has seen it! Nick loves it and I think Damo would too! It’s one of my favourite movies to watch with reactors because the comments are always full of all the facts!

I’m fairly sure this is stated in the end credits of the final episode so could be a bit spoilery

Julie A

I consider it a spoiler.

He was great in "stutterer", small irish short film that made it to the oscars, great to see him in big things since :)

About halfway through the ep, but what i do love about this, and the hard hitting tearjerker moments, is that it shows all the people trying to do the right thing even if it may ruin their career or put them in prison or get them killed, and the full on self sacrifice knowing of the risks involved (ive paused right where the commander says he'll do it himself rather than send one of his men because there might not be enough protection). Some people a lot braver than i think i could ever be gave their lives to try and save others when this happened, i think this show gives them at least a bit of the massive credit they deserve, or the world would be a very different place right now.

😂 I hope you enjoy it, I thought Stellan Skarsgard was incredible in it!

Hello to my fav mates watching series with you. Chernobyl is considered the best presentation of the events even if it is a series and there is drammatization. Here some facts that you will appreciate. 1)the firefighters suits being carried to the hospital basement is chilling as they stand there exactly like that even today, being a very radioactive spot. 2) They never believed anything like that will happen and in general the pattern of the USSR was do everything quickly, no contingency plan cause costs money and time etc. The only hospital with some knowledge in radiation was that hospital in Moscow 3)The radioactive cloud basically covered 40% of Europe. 4) It was funny hearing Damo saying about Ulana going to press. Remember it is USSR, everything is controlled by KGB, secret police, you see them cutting off Pripyat immediately, stalking Legasov. 5) The citizens in Pripyat were evacuated in about 2 hours telling them they will come back in 3 days so did not get anything with them and the scenes you see even today in that city are like they are frozen in time. I am not saying more

Stellan Skarsgard also plays Luthen Rael in Andor, and his performance in that show was heartstopping. Great comment about how you keep holding your breath without even realizing it; me too! It's one of those shows that make me deeply uncomfortable watching it, but I want to keep watching it at the same time.

Kieran Degenaars

Always blows my mind when Boris mentions that the children in Frankfurt weren’t even allowed to play outside. Meanwhile, all the residents of Pripyat are just going about their day

Kieran Degenaars

The helicopter that crashed in this episode is actually based on a real incident. In fact, there is actual footage online of the crash, though I don’t plan on watching it. The pilot had no vision in the smoke, and when he came out the other end, the helicopter’s blades hit the cable hanging from the crane, breaking the blades and the cable

Melissa Redstag

It’s really good! I’ve watched it 3 times now. I wish we could have gotten more of it.

Four hundred Soviet Rubles in 1986, while not an amount worth dying over, was significantly more than US$5 or GB£4.25 in 2026. It was roughly three months average persons salary, which was somewhere between 120 and 150/month. Even though Soviet monthly wages had significantly less purchasing power than those in the developed west, this reward was something in the moment. The sad thing is, the USSR collapsed in 1991, and even if the reward was continued in newly independent Ukraine, the economic collapse and ensuing hyperinflation, made $400 rubles equal $5 within a matter of weeks in the early 1990s.
