I love how quickly you guys are doing these Severance episodes! Thank you so much 😭🫶🏻 I’m so excited to watch when I get home!

Don Della DonDon

Just a couple of observations that I’ve made while watching this series, one of which Damo’s already noticed. For being such a high tech company, all the office equipment looks to have come straight from the ‘80s. Also, while we haven’t seen many of them at this point, all of the vehicles predate the millennium, some by decades. Since they also seem to be fairly pristine that’d take some effort on the show’s creators to gather up. I’m guessing it’s to keep us guessing as to what time period the show takes place in, though they have the latest cellphones and other advanced technology such as the severance process. Very clever Ben Stiller!

"I have no clue, what I'm watching, but I'm enjoying it!" This sums it up perfectly. 😄 I love the show and I really enjoy your discussions. You pay attention to so many little details and taking notes totally helps to connect things. By the way, most of the locations, like the Lumon building and the neighborhood, where Mark lives, are not far away from New York.

Demanda

I believe them about the code detectors just because Mark’s explanation of the retrieval process sounds like it comes from experience.

If Ms Cobel can bring a book in from the outside without any alarms I think it’s fair to assume she can bring things out from the inside as well. And there’s really no risk to her having that in her fridge- only Outie Mark would ever see it, and he wouldn’t have any idea where it came from. I’m also pretty sure Petey never says how he got that recording. So we can’t necessarily assume he smuggled it out himself. One of the most fun things about this show is that you constantly have to question your leaps and assumptions. Sometimes the show depicts things directly, but often we’re left to fill in a lot of gaps on our own, and as the episodes progress it’s easy to forget what we’ve been told outright and what we’ve deduced on our own. On top of that, we know at least some of the characters are liars, which complicates things further!

The rewatch is so interesting because things that I took little notice of on first watch might have deeper meaning! I'm gonna need to start taking notes as well!

Yeah Petey mentioned a group of people who know that Severance is a blight on mankind and are going to do something about it. I wonder if one of them got the recording of Mark in the break room? Maybe a group of whistleblowers?

they don’t shy away from dates completely. the perpetuity wing statue plaques show each CEO’s period, w pip eagan’s being 1987 - 1999, meaning that we must be in the 2000s. i think they show a mix of technology (including cars) so it still feels somewhat removed from our reality.

Ryan Holmes

30 minute conversations after every episode is funny

Shanti (cuchupacu)

i’ve always thought there could be a separate entrance to the severed floor for unsevered employees- not that there wouldn’t be security for them, but it might be different. i doubt all the furniture and supplies are coming down the stairs or that tiny elevator.

Don Della DonDon

Yup, pretty much what I was alluding to. Hard to pin down

Don Della DonDon

Also could apply to the location too as well

Shanti (cuchupacu)

damo has mentioned several times that the way milchick speaks is weird. i’ve always thought he sounded like a kindergarten teacher and the things he says to the employees are quite infantilizing. the MDR bathroom is unisex and has two triangle and circle symbols for male and female. you caught where the pip’s restaurant name came from and it would be worth checking out all the eagan names they show again to see where else you might spot them. petey’s map says “we’re here because we’re not all there.” i love devon! she’s definitely “normal” and must absolutely adore ricken, because he’s totally eccentric and comes off a bit ridiculous. but when they drop off the book, she handles him so well, humoring him while obviously slightly impatient (she said she had to pee). i also love her relationship w mark. you guys missed it, but when they said good night to each other at her house, he called her m’lord and she called him m’lady. 🥰

MB

Fun fact! You can actually read Ricken's book in real life. You can also listen to it on audiobook and it's narrated by Dr. Ricken Lazlo Hale 😂 (might be a fun post-season 1 thing to do)

sarina

Always happy to contribute to some bloopers 🫡 I love your long outro discussions! It makes me even more excited for you to watch the rest of the episodes ☺️

Melissa Redstag

The opening is definitely unsettling, I’m sure that’s what they were going for. It’s very unique and cool. It’s like a creepy video game or something.

Melissa Redstag

Yeah I don’t think MilChik is severed either. It seems like the boss people aren’t severed. I assume because it makes it easier for them to keep track of everything. I think MilChik just acts weird because he is supposed to act super happy and positive around the workers. It seems very fake.

Melissa Redstag

It’s interesting that Lumon has the technology to make the severance possible, but so much of the tech used in the building is old. The computers, the tape recorders, the printers, etc. You would think they would have the most high tech stuff money can buy.

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

I absolutely love the inclusion of Natalie's character. I interpret her as the personification of absolutely useless middle management causing so much waste and red tape :P

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

When Helly was holding the note outside the fire escape door she was trying to also get her head outside the window to trigger the chip switch so that her outie could read the note without having to get it through the code detectors in the lift. She knew that stairwell would switch as well after the experience in episode 1

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

Considering that they're living in Lumon subsidised housing, do you think that maybe the box in Cobel's fridge was also something provided by Lumen? Food service? :P They seem to have their fingers in a lot of pies/industries as a company

Krystal

Yes exactly

TLC

A lot of comments about the old tech and computers and the empty spaces on the Severed floor. If they have the technology to rewire the human brain and sever consciousness into two distinct beings...dont yiu think they could "make" the innie see what they want them to see... rooms of modern tech could appear to be 80s tech.... full rooms could appear empty...and secret files could just look like scary numbers.... Just the ramblings of a lunitic mind 🤣

SierraNicole

I think one of the most challenging and interesting aspects of Severance is really getting a hold on what exactly being Severed means functionally and consequentially. Like based on the intake survey (and their subsequent convos), we know they have general knowledge about the world outside (the fact they're in the US and that other US states exist, the fact that there are oceans and eels, the concept of families, etc), but other than that, their entire worldview is limited to what they're presented with at Lumen. So their conception of morality and history and social etiquette and the work/employee relationship is all defined by the philosophies of Kier and Lumen as presented to them by Milchecks and Cobel. The tour of the perpetuity wing was so revealing about why the corporate doctrine at Lumen feels so pseudo-religious at times. The doctrine includes the Tempers (Woe, Malice, Frolic, and Dread) and their Nine Core Principles (Vision, Verve, Wit, Cheer, Humility, Benevolence, Nimbleness, Probity, and Wiles), and they have this notion that service to work (specifically to Lumen) is the highest form of love. (They've mentioned the Tempers and Principles a few times already but idk if you've caught all of them--which is fine...you pick them up as the show goes on.) Kier is more a messiah (so "Jesus" was apropo from Helly) than a founder/boss. I think that's where Irv's Innie's devotion comes from. He derives a sense of purpose from the mythology and theology of Kier and Lumen. And I imagine you'd need purpose living the life of an Innie, so his defensive about the company and its lore is more personal and foundational than just a regular workplace loyalty. Anyway, I'm not sharing anything important or timely--just rambling because this show puts my mind in that swirly philosophical place, haha. I just think understanding that aspect of their existence as Innies makes the reality of their situation--and Helly's resistance--so much more compelling. I actually earned my BA in moral philosophy but Severance makes me want to go back and focus on philosophy of mind. haha. I don't think a show has been as mentally stimulating for me since I discovered Star Trek as a kid. haha

SierraNicole

Oh! Just want to add that Patricia Arquette does such a wonderful job as Cobel/Selvig. She's such a great actress. And the choices the show and actor make with Milchecks character is so cool. The way he's so menacing despite being explicitly soft-spoken, even-tempered, matter-of-fact, and keeping conversation light, is to impressive to me. Like he's super unsettling. One other thing that I thought was cool about the show is the cinematography. I'm not someone who usually pays attention to the composition of tv show or film shots. And I'm not fluent in the world of film so I don't know anything about it other than what I see as an audience member, but, if you haven't noticed it already, so many of the shots are symmetrical. Like exactly symmetrical. A lot of shows use asymmetry or a lack of balance to make a scene eerie or unsettling, but Ben Stiller and his team, use symmetry and sameness to create that feeling. It feels like an uncanny valley world because it's all so symmetrical. Too perfect and precise to be real, to be lived in. Such a great choice.

Sheri

You guys are too perceptive and smart. No mystery show will ever stump you! :-)

Erin’s Cafe

Regarding the company owning Pip’s and their reach in the town: I’m moderately concerned about the company branding on the water tower. Here in the US, you usually see the town name on a water tower. Is it a literal company town? Is it named Lumon? And does the droplet in the company logo mean they’re involved with the water supply itself? Everyone at that weird non-dinner party had a glass of presumably tap water in front of them. Is there something in the water?

Fun little side note: Ben Stiller and Adam Scott have Severance podcast
