The Lumen workplace has a very liminal feeling

Shanti (cuchupacu)

yes! i had such a long, bad day yesterday and it took me forever to get to your reactions. i’m jumping right in!

I like to think that the intro sequence is Ben's Requiem For a Tuesday Claymation project finally finished :)

Melissa Redstag

I love how funny this show is despite how weird, unsettling, and f’d up it is. The awkwardness is hilarious. The writers are totally genius.

Shanti (cuchupacu)

i believe they took inspiration from “the backrooms” when designing the severed floor for that very reason.

Walter

You can actually read the first 8 chapters of "The You You Are" on Apple Books for free, it's pretty funny

Shanti (cuchupacu)

since you won’t be editing this, i wanted to point out the exchange helly and dylan had about the break room, in case you missed it. helly: “what about the voice behind the door?” dylan: “crying baby, you mean?” helly: “no. like, the angry, mumbly guy.” you asked how mark would know about a tree. they seem to know about things without context, the same way they use vocabulary they don’t remember learning. dylan has mentioned muscle shows, MILFs, and stalactites, none of which should come up at work. 😂 there are nine core principles established by kier eagan. (it’s his photo in ms. cobel’s office.) one of the principles is wiles, which she used to retrieve petey’s chip. the first time the nine were mentioned was during the ice breaker before the melon party. irv said his favorite was cheer. it makes me feel really old that you guys had no reaction to “enter sandman”. 😫😭

What I really love watching back is that we enter the Severance floor at the same time as Helly, so we’re sitting there like her thinking, why aren’t all these other people rebelling and freaking out like I am?!? Because we don’t have eyes on what it’s been like before. I feel like it helps to make it feel even more unsettling because everything is so unknown, just like it is for them. Once you guys are well into Season 2 at some point I fully recommend watching this silly little skit that puts lyrics to the theme song (it has spoilers for Season 1): https://www.instagram.com/reel/DG3aAu7p-pW/?igsh=a3g1d3d1cDBkZm1i. The cast actually did their own version which is cool

Also the song they’re playing at the funeral (Enter Sandman) is played at every Virginia Tech football game when the players enter (I’m from the UK but went on exchange there for a year). Everyone jumps up and down and it’s pretty crazy to experience!!

Shanti (cuchupacu)

i haven’t watched the series or movie yet. i love liminal photography and this kind of premise, so i need to get on that.

Don Della DonDon

Yes, Damo, I’m watching with you but I have watched both seasons before

I always thought Ms. Cobel stole and used the candle in Mark’s wellness session because she was suspicious of him reintegrating like they thought Petey might have done. To me it looked like she was trying to elicit a response from him that would cause him to have those flashback episodes that Petey was having

Just watched episodes 2, 3, and 4 back-to-back on catch-up. FWIW, this is my first-ever viewing of Severance, and I know absolutely nothing about the show beyond what I’ve watched with y’all so far. Like Nick, I’m really intrigued by the music choices. Here are 3 tunes that struck a chord with me (heh): 1. “The Ants Go Marching” (Episode 2) I’m pretty sure a slowed-down version of “The Ants Go Marching” played within the first ten minutes of episode 2. Most of us associate it with a catchy children’s song, but its melody comes from When Johnny Comes Marching Home, a Civil War-era song about soldiers returning from war. That gives it a much darker and more complicated history than its nursery-rhyme reputation suggests. It’s interesting that a tune associated with marching, conformity, and collective movement would show up in a show that’s already raising questions about routine, obedience, and individual agency.

2. “Daydreamin’” by Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott (Episode 2 outro) The outro song for episode 2 was Daydreamin’, which has been in my favorites playlist for years. I looked it up again afterward to make sure I remembered correctly, and it’s actually a pretty brilliant fit thematically. The song uses a giant robot as a metaphor to critique consumer culture, social complacency, and the ways people drift through life without fully seeing what’s happening around them. What struck me is that the title sounds whimsical and dreamy, but the song itself is really about waking up. It asks listeners to question the systems they’re living inside instead of sleepwalking through them. That feels very relevant to what the show is exploring so far.

3. “Enter Sandman” by Metallica (Episode 4) As someone else mentioned, episode 4 featured Enter Sandman. Fun personal note: I got to see Metallica perform it live at Lollapalooza ’96. 🤘🏻🎸🖤 These days it’s mostly known as an arena anthem that gets crowds fired up, but the actual song is much darker than its popular reputation. At its core, it’s about a child trying to fall asleep while confronting fears, nightmares, and the unsettling presence of the Sandman watching over them. Once again, we have a song that’s become culturally associated with something fun and familiar, while its original themes are much more unsettling.

Nikki_KnotDoneYet

What I find interesting is that all three songs seem to orbit similar ideas: * Marching and conformity * Daydreaming and social unconsciousness * Sleep, dreams, and nightmares Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but for a show that seems deeply concerned with consciousness, identity, and agency, that’s a pretty compelling pattern to notice this early on. Curious whether anyone else has been paying close attention to the soundtrack and picking up on similar themes.

Maybe it’s just me, but it also gives me TVA vibes (Loki)

What if they are not really severed...what if the entired world..innie and outtie are the creation of the company..its all one big psychological experiment My other theory is based on something tiramisujen I think speculated on...that is someone from the inside was helping Petey. If so, what if that someone was Helly and after he disappeared she had to make the choice to put herself on the severed floor. Thats why her Outie is so determined that her innie stay.🤔

It's been a while since I've watched the first time - and I don't remember noticing the candle before. I don't think I knew what it was when she was taking it, and then definitely didn't make the connection to it being lit during the session. And you all have even made connections to the colors of it from the begining, always impressed with your observations!

To expand on how they know about things like trees - I think that's what the opening questionairre is about. The "Delaware" answer, it isn't that Delaware is the answer, they're testing if they have kept their base knowledge of the world. They're just trying to remove their personal memories, but keep their knowledge of general facts. So any state or territory would have been a correct answer, confirming they didn't "sever" too much.

CK

The actress who plays Miss Casey is married to the actor who played Zava on Ted Lasso. After you watch the show, it’s interesting to hear how she auditioned and got the role.

Bmac Tattoo

The tree looks kind of like the one his outtie was looking at in this episode. There's a large plant/tree right next to Mark in the Wellness room. There are trees in some of the artwork on the walls on the severed floor too.
