Random cut during the intro… are you editing out the moments of sexual tension now? :P 😂

So a lot of viewers noticed that the scenery Kier is often shown overlooking looks exactly like Michigan surrounded by the Great Lakes. But there’s no actual real-world point where you could stand and see the entire state, as of course it’s massive. But a lot of viewers took that to mean that the area in this world where the characters live is a counterpart to the Great Lakes region of the US. There’s actually an Eagan, Minnesota in real life that may have inspired the name. What’s interesting is that the man in the opening of this episode is whistling “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, a folk song about a famous shipwreck in the Great Lakes where nearly 30 people died. I don’t know why the show keeps referencing my home state, but I’m very curious to know if it means anything.

I don’t think reintegration is as cut and dry as “that was the Innie, now it’s the Outie.” I think what’s happening is exactly what it’s called- Mark’s selves are reintegrating and merging into one. So personally I don’t think that was meant to be Mark’s Outie at work that day, I think it was mostly Innie Mark’s memories and personality now being influenced by Outie Mark’s personality and subconscious. Outie Mark on his own wouldn’t know his way around the severed floor or have memories only his Innie has, so at the very least it was either just Innie Mark acting oddly because he’s feeling defeated, or it was Innie Mark being influenced by the parts of his Outie that are starting to filter through.

you missed the name helena, as in helen of troy. bailiff in the US is a court official, such as the uniformed guards in a courtroom. drummond mentioned the medical team assessing helena’s condition in terms of tempers. either the cult of kier is that pervasive or lumon has their own quasi medicine. if we’re counting years in quarters (872) from the beginning of kier’s term as CEO (1865), it would be the year 2083. but we can’t trust anything from lumon. when natalie presented the paintings to milchick, she said the board wished to express that she received them when she got her current position “and found it extremely moving.” natalie isn’t free to voice her own opinions, but i think there’s ambivalence in her facial expressions. i think the innie and outie overlap during reintegration, like we saw w petey. maybe it’s more a case of dominance instead of replacement. outie mark was dominant for most of the episode, then innie mark was dominant at the end.

addresses and license plates/tags place the town of kier in a state abbreviated as PE, but there’s currently no such state. either this is a slightly different version of reality for the sake of the show, or it’s set in the future in a state that doesn’t exist yet.

Considering Ben Stiller is such a gigantic NBA fan, I'm guessing the no malice palice sign is a nod to the malice in the palice, the brawl 20 years ago between the pacers and pistons.

Innie Mark has/had real feelings towards Innie Helly, He is probably so cold towards Helly because Helena deceived him on the retreat and they made love when Helena was posing as Helly. Not only that, Helly/Helena is an Egan and innies look towards them as basically deities/gods. Mark realizes that he was tricked into having sex with the people in charge of Lumon that are keeping his outie's wife there 24/7. Another thing, when Mark and Reghabi initially met, she described innie Mark as basically a baby due to only existing for two years. It's really messed up to think about what Helena did on that trip.

Demanda

I consider it flat-out sexual assault. Helena purposely deceived IMark by pretending to be someone else and used that deception to have sex with him. The closest real-life equivalent I could think of would be someone impersonating their twin in order to have sex with their partner, and that’s definitely rape.

DN Reacts

Haha 😂 no, it’s because when we record the reaction it has the “previously on” but when we record the show to play in the background it doesn’t. So there is a weird part where we are talking about the “previously on” and it’s not actually there

I think ORTBO being an anagram of ROBOT is there for a reason. It looked like a robot copy of each member of MDR that were guiding their way to Woe's Hollow in last episode. If you remember back to the season's premiere when Mark runs the hallways to Wellness trying to find Gemma/Ms Casey, we see a shadowy figure watching him in the background and we haven't seen who that is yet. I feel like it was a bit robotic as well.

sarina

I agree! I think when those flickers happen it’s flickering between innie and outie but it went back to innie Mark afterwards, which would explain why he looked confused because he doesn’t know his outie is reintegrating.

Susen

Agreed, it was mainly innie Mark there, but just those flashes of the merged Mark. The lighting changes when they switch and we just see it in short bursts. I think innie Mark is just more susupicious and keeping his cards a little closer to his vest these days.

Just some things in the new intro sequence- When Mark shines the torch on the water you can see reflections of Gemma and Helly running in opposite directions. Same again when we fly down the exports corridor at the very end of the intro, we flicker between Helly and Gemma in the elevator. Raises the question of who's love interest will be prioritised? Mark S? or Mr Scout?

Shanti (cuchupacu)

i’ve been going over these names from the beginning. i usually do it w books, especially after harry potter, where all the names are so intentional.

Shanti (cuchupacu)

i think outie mark may have been coming through there because i can’t see innie mark being that cold towards helly- wary, yes, but not cold- just as helly was never mean.

Michael Weiner

Mark is not “reintegrated.” He’s feeling the effects of the process of reintegration but it’s far from completed.

tiramisujen ≽^•⩊•^≼

I think it was mostly innie Mark while on the severed floor. I don't think the switch was very long, it was just flickers while the reintegration process is ongoing. The same thing happened to Petey. Remember that innie Mark has no clue that his outie is attempting reintegration, so these flashes would be very disorienting for him. I think we see innie Mark acting a bit more like outie Mark here because of all the crazy things that have happened the last few days. He's been assaulted and now has to face the physical person that did it even though the person controlling that body right now- didn’t. He probably also feels like he assaulted Helly as well and has to be the one to tell her all of this. He must be so beyond angry at Helena and Lumon and he hasn’t got anywhere to place that other than at Helly and Millchick

Sheri

I never considered it before but I think it's possible that some of Outie Mark's personality (specifically his anger, cynicism and pessimism) leaked over into Innie Mark this episode. I think it may have amplified the betrayal and frustration Innie Mark felt because of Helena's actions, but it was not a conscious thing. Innie and Outie Mark are still separate entities.

CK

Aside from the considerations of why someone would want to be severed in the first place, as a hiring manager, I would distrust Lumon and their accessibility to the employee via the chip still in the applicant's head.

Gatsby

Just an important note going back to last episode from your lead-in about last episode re: how Irving knew Helly was actually Helena. All the things you mentioned about the computer screen are correct but I did not hear you say you saw how the numbers coalesced and then took the shape of Helly's face for a second. The numbers corresponded to her letters as you knew but as they came together in the build-up, it flashed her face. The suspicion, the restful dream when your brain continues to work on a problem for you overnight, the numbers corresponding to her letters, and the flash of her face, all led Irving to connect the dots and the truth. Not sure if you knew but worth knowing. It's worth looking up online to see it.

Just a note not to overlook that the show is very heavy on satire and social commentary. Whenever the show's creators (writers, actors, directors, producers) talk about the show, they mention ideas about work/corporate culture and personal identity. So much of the world of Severance is odd but it's deliberate to remind us how our own world is odd. There's a tendency for Severance fans to get bogged down in plot minutiae like "but how many goats are there???"

TLC

The PE could also stand for Pip Eagan and the are is owned and controlled by Lumon as an enclave where they run there own private government.

Michael Weiner

Mark was not his outie at work. Not.

Ellyana Smith

keep in mind: everyone except for milchik is allowed to use big words. drummond alone used a handful during that meeting (eg: “calamitous ORTBO”). it seems like an extension of the racist tendencies lumon showed when they gave him and natalie those bizarre paintings. they seem to love demeaning milchik. i mean, they literally replaced him with a child! as if they’re saying “your job is so simple, a child could do it”

Ellyana Smith

and this is what milchik was trying to get at when he said to natalie, “i believe we may face similar challenges” or something along those lines

Jackson Potluck

While I do agree this is sexual assault, it calls so many more things into question. I mean, isn't innie Mark assaulting outie Mark by having sex using his body without his permission? That rabbit hole is so deep!

Jackson Potluck

They make it pretty clear which Mark you're dealing with when it's Outie Mark vs. Innie Mark. It's still very much spatially dictated. There is some reintegration but that isn't switching that is both of them at the same time. It's confusing for them but it isn't one or the other.

Brohanson

That’s a good point! Though my guess is that the answer would depend if you’re willing to accept that innies are their own persons with full body autonomy when they are innies. Helena pretending to be Helly takes it a bigger step forward.
