Lone Star: Targeted
Chapter 7
Lone Star spent all day Thursday flying around high above Dallas, trying to get Havoc to take a shot at her. And she worked with the police to raid Madam Vu’s brothel that night, managing to arrest twenty men and sixty hookers. Madam Vu somehow managed to escape capture.
Lone Star spent Friday morning on the computer looking for anything that would lead her to either Havoc, or the Gaines Gang. After lunch, she suited up and took to the skies. Again, she mostly soared above the city inviting a pot shot.
She was about to give up when something slammed into her Telekinetic shield. It was a .50 Cal bullet, but she didn’t see the muzzle flash. Then her phone rang. It was Tomboy.
“Lone Star, I see you directly above me,” Tomboy said, sounding excited. “I heard the shot, but I’m not sure exactly which building it came from.”
“I see you,” she said, spotting the red, white, and blue clad blonde astride her motorcycle. “I think it came from the north of you.”
Lone Star began to descend slowly, keeping her shield up. And then she saw movement atop a five story structure. A black-clad man.
“Havoc!” she cried.
“You see him?”
“Yes, he’s atop the Capital Trust Credit Union building.”
“See it,” Tomboy cried. “On my way up. Distract him, and we’ll catch him between us.”
The FEM Fighter couldn’t fly, so had to take the elevator or stairs. Not a problem. That would only take a few minutes. Lone Star could keep the murderous ex-cop busy that long.
Lone Star flew straight down in a spiral flight path. Havoc shot up at her three more times, but she was too fast and he missed every time. He didn’t even hit her shield.
“I’m going to mess you up!” she screamed as she reached him.
Havoc threw his arms up, deflecting her flight straight into the building’s HVAC unit. There wasn’t a screen around it, so she slammed back-first into the hard steel. The impact caved in that side, and the unit failed with a loud CLUNK.
Lone Star, head spinning, breath coming in shallow gasped, dropped to all fours on the roof. Havoc aimed his rifle at her, and squeezed off three shots. She just managed to form a shield, though the first bullet was more deflected than stopped. It pierced the HVAC above her head.
Seeing he couldn’t shoot her, Havoc threw the rifle away with a snarl. He charged her, looking grim and determined. She remained on all fours, watching his approach, and then flew straight up at the last possible second.
Havoc slammed into the HVAC with a pained grunt. “Bitch.”
“Figures. Man tries to snipe a good woman out of the sky, and then calls her a bitch,” she said. “That’s why you belong in prison. Forever.”
“You’ll never see it,” he growled, eyes narrowed and furious. “I’ll put you in a shallow grave first.”
“All things considered, you’ll suffer more than me,” she said. “Ha!”
That response took Havoc aback. He froze and blinked at her. And that’s when Tomboy exploded out of the roof access door. As he turned to engage the blonde FEM Fighter, Lone Star flew straight at him. To her surprise, he dodged her fist, grabbed her arm, and threw her at Tomboy.
The blonde beauty ducked under the thrown heroine, but stopped to look back. Lone Star felt disorientation for a second, but caught herself as she flew over the side. Dropping down below the roofline, she flew to the other side of the building and then back up.
Havoc was squared off with Tomboy when the Sisterhood heroine returned. She slammed into his back feetfirst, knocking him stumbling toward Tomboy. The beautiful FEM Fighter smiled brightly, leapt up, and spun into a fierce kick to Havoc’s head. He was knocked off to the side. Both heroines went after him.
He picked up his sniper rifle by the barrel, and used it like a bat to strike Lone Star in the belly. She curled up around the rifle, taking it away as she flew back a dozen feet. Tomboy slammed into him a second later, and they traded kicks and punches.
It quickly proved obvious Havoc was a vastly superior fighter. He started forcing Tomboy back toward the edge, breaking through her crumbling defenses with one punch after another.
Lone Star pulled herself together, still not fully recovered. Her breathing came in gasps, but she had to help her sister in crimefighting. So she attacked him from behind. Using the rifle as a club, she pounded it across his shoulders. Havoc cried out, dropping to one knee. Then when she swung the rifle again, he activated his Power Bracer shield and swung it at her.
That shield of pure energy hit her like a blast out of the blue. The Sisterhood heroine went flying over the edge, and all the way to the ground. She pulled up her Power at the last second, but too late to completely save herself.
Lone Star hit the ground hard. “Ugh!”
Blackness sucked her down. But then she woke with a start, unable to tell how long she’d been unconscious. It felt like just a second, but…
“Ooooh. That hurt so bad.”
The busty heroine staggered to her feet, swooning a moment. She looked up, scowling. Oh, he was going to pay for that! As soon as she felt steady, Lone Star called up her Power, and lifted up toward the roof. She listened intently, wanting to come up behind Havoc. He was too strong for either of them to fight him one-on-one.
Nothing. No sounds of struggles. No banter. Just silence.
Cresting the roofline, she scanned the rooftop. Lots of battle debris. The HVAC was clearly damaged and no longer working. But there wasn’t anyone up there. No Havoc. No Tomboy.
“Did he take Tomboy?” she gasped, heart sinking.
She quickly flew down to ground level, circling the building looking for her friends limp body on the ground. Not there. A FEM Fighter could survive a fall from that height, but she wasn’t anywhere to be found. Which meant…
“Oh my God! No. No,” she cried, panic consuming her.
Lone Star flew around and around, waiting for Havoc to exit. He couldn’t be allowed to take Tomboy away. She had to find them, and save her friend. But as the minutes ticked away…
