Hi All,

A long overdue update.  Firstly:  Apologies for being so quiet...I kept putting my update off as I was hoping to share some good news and wait until I had a confirmed release date, but it feels like I'm chasing the horizon at this stage so I just need to get my head out of the sand and start talking to you folks again.

I also had some other (real life) shit going on (which I won't go into) which alternated between good news and then bad news and then back to good news.  This did NOT impact the progress of the game, so I'm not blaming the delayed release on any personal sob story.   But it did impact my willingness to share more frustration and potentially disappointing news to you good folks  (and kept me off other forums).  But that's my bad for not manning up and giving you folks regular updates.   I'll try to get back on the regular-update horse again and keep you updated more frequently.

Where we should be:

At this stage, we should have released Ep17 a couple of weeks ago and should be well started into Ep18.  But as we all know, this is not the case.

Where we are:

Ep17 is still not ready yet.   Writing wise - This is definitely going to be our largest episode ever.  And we're probably about 90% done with the base script.

Artwork  - I won't give full details as I'll only stress myself (and probably all of you) but at the moment our art progress is not where we would like it to be.  As you know, we lost our primary artist just before we started Ep17.    And then we on-boarded two new artists.  And then lost one of them.  And then on-boarded another new artist (so currently at 2 again).  And in that same space of time we have also had 3 potential animators in the mix plus two other artists that almost joined the team but none of those have worked out as the quality required just wasn't there.  And that's in addition to the countless number of auditionees that we went through.

And when our previous artist left, there was no notice or handover period.   He just "ghosted" us.  Literally not a single word to say he'd left.   He was normally pretty quiet anyway (and I know there was some real-life shit happening), so it took me a while to actually realize he wasn't working away in the background.   Because he left in this manner (without a trace),  we lost access to a lot of assets and also a lot of base art/files from previous episodes that we needed as building blocks for this episode.  Where this happened, we had to start from scratch, which was a major pain in the ass.    So this episode wasn't just about teaching the WTHI cast a new dance, we had to re-build the whole damn village!

So we have lost a fuck-ton of time/effort in this episode.  And frustration levels are extremely high. As I've said before, rest assured that come hell or high water, Patreon or not, deadlines or not, I will finish this game!    But if it wasn't for the current team being so focused and co-operative, I would have thrown in the towel, dropped Patreon and just finished the game in my own time.

To be honest, I don't know how Red and Cell have managed to stick around, based on the amount of work and effort they've had to contribute in their debut episode, so hats off to them.  And similarly, a massive thanks to Ace for going above and beyond his writing role and helping to tie the whole thing together.

And based on what we have planned for Episode 17, this is going to our largest number of images also (approx 400  planned versus 300 in Episode 16).  Another mistake (which is my fault) was not scaling this back much earlier in the process when our artist left the team.  But we have written the script based on that amount of art so we are (almost) committed at this stage.

Working efficiently as a combined foursome has proven very difficult as we all figure out how best to work together and share assets, files, ideas and try to merge styles and get something that looks like a single episode, rather than a messed up patchwork from four completely different contributors.  There haven't been any arguments or disagreements (no divas allowed on the team), so that's not a  problem, it is just extremely difficult to hit the ground running with a brand new art team.

We have finally figured out a system that works for us and a way to get the improved quality we want to introduce while at the same time producing in the required time frame.   However, we have only hit this rhythm now and have a lot of catch up to do.  We are probably about 70% of where we need to be regarding artwork but we have good plans (and a lot of pre-work complete) to produce a shit-load of art in the next 7-10 days).

So current plan is to try to get something out this month (as close to a complete episode as possible).  That's all I can commit to at this stage.  I'll keep you updated every few days, so you're not in the dark.

Also, for anybody that drops or reduces their pledge, I want to assure you that you will still get the relevant updates your current tier entitles you to (including Episode 17 release) even after you drop / reduce.  To ensure this happens, please send me a DM and I'll ensure I get back to all of you and personally send you any links that you'll miss out on after you drop.

And for anyone who reads this long-winded post and feels the summary is "blah blah...excuse, excuse, blah, blah", I completely understand, so feel free to direct your venting my way in the comments or in DMs and I'll get back to all of you.   The only other assurance I can give you is that these delays are not because of a lack of effort from the Dev team.

Thanks,

CG

Sounds like you and the team are having a rough time of it. The work you and the team have done on the game so far has more than earned you any extra time you need to take with the game, so I hope you keep grinding and don't beat yourself up about it :)

Grey Metal Fox Games

I've would have lost it having someone on the team go 'ghost' with all those files assets, and have to rebuild from scratch?! And having to get all the new people up to speed on established development processes for this game? I can only imagine that you need to decompress from all this which explains the delay in communication with us, as well as the next update. Life happens, no worries.

Poke-Ladd

if you need a break just say so

I couldn't agree more with previous comments. You have had a difficult task re-grouping and re-building your team. Hopefully you will come out stronger from this. Also for this and future projects I am sure you've gotten some very beneficial experiences in regards to sharing and accessing files and assets, as well as how to communicate and delegate within the team. I am certain that (even though it might not feel like it now) you will find that this moment had a profoundly positive impact on your future success. As for my pledge, I would like to keep being a part of that success so my pledge stands. (Also the pervert in me can't wait to see what new stuff you will produce)

hell as long as it not ends like Mr.zz with you all is good don´t worry now so much.

CG can't take all the blame. Every time he says "How does this sound?" I reply "Awesome! I got this sink we can throw in."

Man, what is it with artists, leaving a project and taking assets with them? It's not only unprofessional, but also shitty on a personal level. Not the best of news obviously, tbh I didn't expect it to be so bad. Of course I figured if Cheeky goes quiet, it can't be good, but not that the delay would become so long altogether. I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me, but not in the way that I want to blame anybody, just that I'm really starving for an update of my favourite VN. Hope the work goes well and we see a close to complete update at the end of the month.

Remember to enjoy your success as you overcome these hurdles..

You apologize too much. Thanks for not giving up on the project. That said, stop stressing yourself! I think you underestimate how much your audience cares about your health. The update is appreciated but please take your time and enjoy your work.

Its not the of the world mate...relax....shit happens and sometimes things dont go as planned and keep in mind that we understand we all been there at some point in our lives so just calm down...I've seen devs who make more than you and take twice the time you take for a release thats half the content you have. Dont forget to enjoy your while you do it otherwise it wont have that passion that it should. keep up the good work.

luc

relax its nice and enjoy

hi devs. I am sorry to hear u lately. have had such a frustrating time making the game. I hope u also sometimes enjoy ur work, and i am sure u du, I dont sink u could make such a great game if u dint have fun i the proces. for me this game stands sky skrabers tall infront of all other games ( 250 games). some of the reasons r that even though the mc can cheat and lie he stil treats the girls nice before, after and during sex, I really like that. no forced anal which I disgust, it seams kind of gay to me

Hello CG and other devs, This must have been a very stressful time for you all, and I have no intention of ending support for your work/art because of a few delays. I will gladly give you extra time to produce a product of high quality. As a patreon, I also do not want to be ghosted, so updates are important. But, progress will come when it comes, and I know I will enjoy it. I do not want to be your boss because I give money, I am just a fan offering his thanks for your work.

Aprilsun

Take your time guys, we know this is none of your fault. Just relax and look forward.

Don’t worry Cheeky, one of the biggest risks with small teams is a loss of even a single member can have massive consequences, let alone what you’ve had to deal with. Work on the episode and release it when it’s ready, don’t rush it, Katie would be very disappointed in you! :)

As recent events have showed us, long term solutions are better than short term fixes. It looks like you're all set to work efficiently together going forward, and that's what counts. As far as releases go, you're actually on a faster pace than the other two developers I follow.

DA22

See above and yeah if that means once one episode will have to skip a month or two, so be it. Well and of course always make sure the characters and files used are shared and you have at least a copy in backup so will never have this happen again. For the rest, just keep up the great work. and we have no rights to complain. :P

SkipDog61

A lesson learned, please do not let this storm drain your spirit of creating an enjoyable game. Stress will only reduce your passion, know that the game is a product of your passion. I and many others will wait for your next update, just keep moving forward and please smile.

Felix

Keep your heads up. You made some decisions, some good ones, some not so good ones and some worse ones. Everyone do that. What is different is how we managed them and learn from our past decisions. It is nice to see that you didn't take the easy way and are fully committed to this project.

Burgh917

Extremely glad you didn't give upon the project. Love the characters and the story, looking forward to future updates.

Please, take this as the advice/observation it is, and not a criticism. Every release seems to be bigger and (accordingly) later than the previous one. I think you may be struggling with 'scope creep' aka 'just one more thing' syndrome. Thankfully, the solution is a bit of extra planning at the start and some self discipline as you go along. If you like, I'll share what I remember from a project planning class I took years ago, but I'm pretty you can find better and more relevant info online if you just poke around a bit. Again, not a criticism, just an observation or suggestion.
