When Bad Machinery was finished, Giant Days was entering its final year, By Night was coming out and before I started work on Steeple, I should have taken a rest, but my mind was a factory making nothing, a machine that would not turn off after 20 years. I have a whole folder marked simply '2018' full of failed experiments, one-off comics, oddments called things like "line experiment 15", re-draws of ancient comics. Not a good time for the mind. There's a series pitch I came up with (on request) for artist Erica Henderson, so confused that hopefully no one will ever see it and she has destroyed the files. There's a Marvel treatment I did with Wil Moss that, while interesting, probably would not have impressed the faithful. I eventually had to go into a meditative state for nearly two weeks, repointing brickwork, day after day, until my personality healed. I'm a dab hand with a mortar trowel now - but at what cost?

Here are a few bits and pieces from what I refer to as "the hinterland".

You know my mind has gone when Shelley starts talking about Batman.

Like a British prima ballerina, Claire has a future in cyber.

"Dessing the classics"

A re-do

Maybe I'll put the Marvel stuff up one day. Though I have a strong feeling that I'm not allowed to. Just ask me about it in person. I don't want a cease and desist from Michael the Mouse.

I'm glad you mention the prima ballerina, my mind immediately went there when I saw that page on Twitter!

Does that "mortal trowel" have the hardened edge for dealing mortal blows to your enemies?

Tim Day

Does the Marvel stuff involve Death’s Head 2? Because if so the world needs this content.

Timothy Clark

If ever you need to phone one in, "Des'd Up Classics" would always be welcome

Brian Perler

Now I really, REALLY want to see the Marvel stuff. (Otherwise I'll just have to assume it involved Wolverine getting killed by a green, scaly, human/mermaid hybrid, probably by accident.) (Actually, I kinda want to see that anyway now.)

Will Shetterly

If you're sure Marvel won't buy what you did, there's no reason not to share it. It's just fan art now, and your fans want to see it!

William Cole

I'm imagining a story link between the first two where Lottie has an existential crisis and goes around asking all her friends how to live the best life.

Pierpaolo Di Camillo

Desmond as an omnipresent demigod... Now I can't stop thinking that you always design your pages with him in and then remove him during the final stage.

Jason Clements

The Shelley/Batman story may not have had a future, but the artwork in that first page is just delicious!

Thanks! It had a sharpness that I work towards.

"I know it's hard" - brilliant. :) Poor kid never stood a chance.

Yes, but no matter how chaotic that year was, any year that led to the magical Steeple is a runaway success by any measure. Also, if this post is about soliciting fan requests (wasn’t it?), I’m still hoping for a Bad Machinery Oceans-type heist where the gang has to come back together from all different places in their current lives to pull one last great heist/job/etc to save Tackleford. And if I’m being extra shameless, I also hope Amy Beckworth-Chilton plays a George Clooney role, Shelley a Brad Pitt role, and the kids fill out the rest with maybe Little Claire as some sort of acrobatic marvel? I should think that’s enough to get started.

Maybe the most shameful line in my career, until I redrew it to make it even more shameful.

I have a "Wales is OK" tee that I bought *many* moons ago. It's blue with white writing rather than the grey/red variant that The Boy is sporting here. I shall have to dig it out for future trips across the Severn...
