GOOD NEWS ITEM

I'm just putting the finishing touches to a special story that will run on badmachinery.com in February and March. I think it will go down well but I'm never too sure. I could be a smoking ruin after it concludes. But $3/mo and up (Beanie tier) Patreon subscribers will get the whole thing on day one and I am excited to upload this thing for you.

LESS GOOD, SOME MIGHT SAY

In less positive news, having worked on writing a Lottie story called "The Great British Bump-Off" on and off for months, and finally knocked it into 64 pages of shape, I had to kick it into the long grass. I might go back to it but I think it was so serpentine in its construction that it was more of a technical challenge, if you will, than an enjoyable story to read. I had begun to genuinely panic about it - and that ain't right.

HE TURNS TAIL AND FLEES

I've been working full tilt writing and drawing pages for a couple of years and it may be time to enter one of my periodic low-power modes, doing some fun comic strips. I'm knackered.

I looked earlier this week at reactivating bobbins.horse, but while I enjoyed my trawl through the comics I made in 2019 and early 2020, I don't think I can do any more of them. So I'll have to find something else to serve as a vehicle for my dippy sitcom jokes and low octane plot devices. Don't worry, I have a few ideas.

A MEAGER FORMAT

I still like doing wide strips (like this) while I find doing 4-koma strips (like this) is "a bastard of a job". But I'm not sure that those wide strips work particularly well on modern screens and I am willing to engage with a tall comic format if you, the reader, struggle with the classic wide newspaper strip on your chosen devices. It is not 2005 any more.

There is also the compromise candidate, the square comic, popular with Instagram comickers, me in 2003/4, and Microsoft. Oh, why lie to you, whichever I choose, I'll make it as difficult for myself as possible.

FIG 1: Here's what I chose to present in the format that was best exemplified by Peanuts. This was half the strip, The other half featured even more esoteric viewing angles. I did not receive a medal that day.

FIG 2: Microsoft based its current logo on the layout of the original Scary Go Round comic. They will learn, as I did, that visual monotony is a hard taskmaster and the odds of putting two book pages in the wrong order only get shorter, the more four-square comics you make.

Honestly, I just enjoy following along with your work. You come up with some interesting and funny stuff! And you keep inventing new characters that I like as much as the old characters. Please be nice to yourself and don’t burn yourself out!

Claire

serpentine? challenging? panic? yet still you resist my editorial cry? Strong as an ox.

Anna McDuff

Oh and wide strips display just fine on my iPad, my webcomic reading device.

Gavin Sheedy

I was reading the Spider-man newspaper strips (mistake) on this, the world’s smallest smartphone, and if I flip it on it’s side, it was perfect. Otherwise, the ipad becomes essential.

Joanna Castellon

I'll be honest, wide strips are so hit or miss depending on the browser and tech I use I have to admit I prefer the 4 down panel or the square option because I at least know it will work.

Matthew

Perhaps you need to lead the charge into a daring new comics paradigm. Triangular comics? Or maybe even the forbidden hexagon!

scarygoround

Did I not already live with an editor of extreme skill, you would be my first call.

scarygoround

This sounds bloody brilliant, six sides, all of them GENIUS

scarygoround

I think it is going to have to be the square, the compromise candidate

scarygoround

With great power comes a great daily comic strip

scarygoround

But burning myself out is part of the brand at this point!!!

Gavin Sheedy

And repetition. Much repetition. Not intended to be read like a book. Maybe I’ll save them them for my extreme old age.

Claire

the loyalty, the loyalty!

John C. Kirk

“Spider-Verse” (comic) had some commentary on this: the bad guy turns up in a newspaper strip, then gets frustrated by how long everything is taking. “Are you brain damaged? Is there no short term memory in this dimension?”

John C. Kirk

Sorry to hear about the Lottie story. Hopefully the work you’ve done can be salvaged somehow. If you do go for square comics, that would presumably make it easier to cut and paste unused panels?

Gavin Sheedy

Can you tell me your plan… one… more… time?

scarygoround

I hadn't drawn anything final, thank goodness. My whole process is about making sure I don't commit until the last minute, because drawing is so labour intensive.

Brian Durcan

I thought that Microsoft strip wasn't so interesting at first but YELLOW really works as a punchline.

Jeremy Impson

> Oh, why lie to you, whichever I choose, I'll make it as difficult for myself as possible. You were only ever fooling yourself, John.

Jack

Grateful for whatever you conjure from your brain files and finger tubes as ever Mr Allison. Don't make yourself sweaty and stressed over the things we, your greedy public, rip from your think box for a pound a month or whatever. I don't mind what shape things are as I have various devices (showing off now). x

Rich Holmes

I am an old fart who not only still knows the arcane secret of how to turn your phone sideways, I don't even use my phone to read your comics. I have a landscape format computer monitor for that. (I do a few other things with it as well, but mainly for that.) Anyway, as long is it's an Allison comic I'll find a way to read it.

Sean Kinlin

I read your comics on my laptop, and it can handle any format just fine. Also, definitely don't work on stuff that makes you panic - whatever you're in the mood to work on, I'm sure I'll enjoy.

THOMAS J CALLAHAN

I think whatever orientation you pen your work in we will find a way to read it!

Brian Perler

Of course, the "4-koma" style is easier to put onto Webtoons, or whatever the kids are using these days, but whether that's a plus or a minus is for others to decide.

Rob Cottingham

Rotate my screen? Child's play. Read it on two landscape smartphones side by side? Happily. In fact, I recommend adopting an attitude of outright hostility to the user experience with a horizontal-and-vertical-scrolling extravaganza built for a hybrid Flash-Java-RealPlayer-ActiveX plugin that we have do download and reinstall for every panel.

William Cole

Ah, Mr. Allison, thou givest, and thou takest away. But blessed be thy name.

Jen Decay

Take care of yourself, John. All that extra stress isn't worth it to appease us, we understand!

Greg Morrow

I have been reading the recent Steeples stories in pdf as you release them here, which very easily scales to show a whole page without scrolling (I have fairly large screens). I am somewhat indifferent to format so long as it's not too wide to require left-right scrolling and not so tall that scaling to a single screen height reduces readability or detail. So helpful!

Angerboda

I love your work. And I hope you will take Good care of yourself :)
