Friends! I have not done a Q&A for ages! If you have every wanted to ask me anything, I will endeavour to answer - just put your query in the comments.

I've been digging through my old projects folder, from the mid-late 2010s, and found all sorts of weird stuff I'd forgotten. There are folders for projects with names like MY STAR, YAWNING SKY, BUMP and CODSWALLOP that went absolutely nowhere. I need to exercise my memory about these. Perhaps I can remember the work I started on NEW AVENGERS for Marvel? But I'll talk about (almost) anything and craft/process questions that might help you out with your work are welcome.

Have you ever thought about adding a talking robot to your cast of characters?

Neil Duncan

If Steeple is the Bobbinsverse Lovecraft (minus the... unsavoury aspects) and your upcoming Conan project is the Bobbinsverse Robert E Howard, what do you think will be the next Weird Fiction author you take on?

Mark Kirwan

Would be very interested in hearing about that New Avengers project, and/or various other 'Big 2' pitches that didn't come to pass

Sails

Have you considered replacing the now-arrested Mrs Clovis with a ex-soldier, who's overly keen to slay the demons? Reasons in comments.

Sails

Firstly to show the priest where his violent ways might lead him.

Sails

And secondly to make it clear to the priest just how much of his past trauma is causing him to jump straight to violent solutions.

Sean Kinlin

You've occasionally done comics set in the U.S. Do you find that you need to do any research for those, or is (u. s. of) American culture so pervasively exported to the rest of the world that you automatically know everything you need about us?

Steve McSheffrey

I'm imagining you doing a mash up of MY STAR, YAWNING SKY, BUMP and CODSWALLOP even though you gave no clue about them. Codswallop sounds like a fun, random name that should just be used no matter what the project is about. As to a question, any chance the boys from Bad Machinery will get any future love? Sonny was in particular was left off in a very intriguing and nebulous way.

Jon Sibley

Would love to hear about any past dealings with the major publishers that never happened, for whatever reason. And why wouldn't Marvel just publish Kit & The Wolf? Another Wolverine comic on the shelf surely couldn't hurt. Did you ever approach them with it?

Emil

I suspect this is a long-running topic for you two...

Emil

Do you eavesdrop a remarkable amount? Your ear for dialog is remarkable, especially for how kids speak with each other, and I've always been curious where that originates.

unspiek

Clark Ashton Smith, FTW!

Marc Arsenault

I want to see a Robert Cop collection! Warts (and notes and doodles) and all! Robert Cop!

Jeffrey Boyle

Do you have a pie-in-the-sky, time/money are no object dream story you would love to tell? I have been astonished at your constancy and consistency over these many years and I have wondered if you ever hoped for a couple of years to conceptualize and create something that would just be delivered in one doorstop-sized collection.

Margaret Nupponen

I know you have moved on from the Bobbins characters, but I really enjoyed the older stories, even though the graphics were more primitive than what you do now. I think they were Bobbins precursors, like Len had a hamster and somebody was married to Iliana, the Icelandic girl. I have been wondering if you might make them available again online, like they used to be.

scarygoround

Marc it would barely be a pamphlet! This is not a coherent body of work!

scarygoround

This is a great question but I've never read HP Lovecraft!

Sails

Fair enough. Here's a real question then: any idea why Billie's hex was bent? Feels like that plot's being left behind, and I'm curious if those two girls meant the hex to do something different to Mrs Clovis.

scarygoround

I can't really do a post on this - it's in the first Steeple volume. The hex was meant to free Mrs Clovis from what the witches perceived as domestic servitude (her "calling"). When Billie accidentally got hexed, she saw a vision that made her question her do-gooding calling, and head immediately for the Church of Satan. But when she got there, she just continued to do good anyway as she was intrinsically a good egg.

Joanna Castellon

Which part of the story gets you most stressed out in writing? Taking for example a full volume which usually has a starting, middle, and end result, is there any part of the story writing that you always simply struggle in, and if so, how do you push through it?

Marc Arsenault

I’ll take that pamphlet! I’ll even publish it! Coherent Shmoherent! Robert Cop!

Patrick M Fitzgerald

Do you have an artist or writer you'd like to work with on a one-shot or short series?

Neil Duncan

Hah! Fair enough. You've somehow nailed the vibe, with all the Church of Satan cultists, the creeping horrors from the deep, etc.

Ross Webster

Is there any way of accessing the long lost live action Bobbins movie/TV show?

scarygoround

Is this a joke or a reference to something I've forgotten about?

Ross Webster

Not sure exactly. I remember a long time ago on the Bobbins or Scary Go Round site there was a post mentioning a short film or TV episode (I don't remember if it was official or a fan project) and it featured a still image of actors playing Shelley and two male characters I don't recall sitting around either a dingy office or waiting room. I haven't been able to find the image online so I'm now starting to wonder if this is something like Mandela Effect going on.

scarygoround

At first I thought you'd dreamt this, then I remembered what it is. It was a still from an old Jane Asher film or TV play that I found (probably when it was re-run on BBC Four) - I had a look but couldn't work out which one but it was one where she wears specs and sits in a dingy waiting room!

Ross Webster

Ah, that eplains it then! Good news is I wasn't dreaming or having a senior moment. Bad news is it was a case of mistaken identity. I looked up Jane Asher who had quite the career and does indeed look like Shelley when she was younger. Unfortunately she would've been too old for any live actions Bobbinsverse role. In any case, thanks for looking into this for me!

Richard Kirk

Are there any 'power tools' you would like to have for your work? Or is doing as much as possible by hand an essential part of the overall look? I can imagine you could have something that could match your hand lettering and lay out speech balloons. Or something that could analyse the drawings for depth and allow you to shift your viewpoint. Or even something that could take your pencil sketch and turn it into something close to your finished product.

Aaron Hess

What accents do the central characters in Giant Days and Bad Machinery have? My kids love it when I read the comics to them and do voices, but as an American I’m making pretty random stabs at region and class.

Mark Tweedale

I saw the Spanish edition of The Great British Bump-Off is called "Se ha Horneado un Crimen", which translates to "A Crime Has Been Baked" according to Google Translate. I'm curious, since puns show up so frequently in your work, do translators talk to you about the direction to take a pun when there's no direct translation possible?
