I like the little conflict going on here with Xena and Gabrielle in disagreeing on how they would approach the situation with Solan. It was very organic disharmony between them that made a lot of sense and showed how much that the characters are both their own people with their own opinions that differ from each other. Resolved it just as organically too. That’s good writing for you. Gabrielle’s hero-worship is either lessening or she just realizes that she’s not a go-along-to-get-along kind of gal. Not even with Xena. Just makes the character all the more dynamic as a main character. Appropriate now she had leading credit which was something Lucy Lawless fought for by the way. She couldn’t understand why she was the only one in the main titles when Renee O’Connor had just as much screen-time as she did all throughout Season 1. She was very adamant that if they’re keeping Gabrielle around for Season 2 that she got main title credit alongside her. Shows how awesome she is. This one doesn’t get a big head. To this very day she is still extremely humble. Not like the other from the other show who is a sad excuse for a human being.

What a way to start a season 😁 and there should be an AU where Evil Xena gets the Ixion's Stone so we could have Evil Centaur Xena, just to horrify Hunter ha! 🤪🤪 love the reaction, can't wait for this bonkers season

Girl4Music

Did you see the drawing of Evil Ixion Centaur Xena on Tumblr? It was so good. I'd love to read that fan fiction but they'd have to bring Gabrielle in somewhere for me to be truly invested in it.

Herbert West MD

I did see it, and that would be a great fanfiction.. Gabrielle can ride Centaur Xena to tame her 🤪

... great reactions, again... knew xena having a kid would blow hunter's mind 🤣 but even tash looked confused as to why Xena would even consider telling Solan the truth and actually being his mother... 🤣

Such a good start to the season. Finding out xena has a child really does throw a viewers perspective off axis. You can rethink alot of things in season one with renewed insight into how much grief and guilt and pain that she carries.

2 Girls 1 Episode

SHE DIDN’T EVEN GET TO RAISE HER OWN KID BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T WANT HIM TO GROW UP TO BE LIKE HER OR PUT HIM IN ANY DANGER. Crazy man. Also crazy how he looks more like Gabrielle than Xena but… 🤣 casting director took one look at that kid and said YOU’RE PERFECT. -Hunter

2 Girls 1 Episode

My first instinct is always to just tell them the truth because I don’t like lies and secrets, but it wouldn’t do the kid any good to know at this point I don’t think. These kinds of situations are always so sticky when the parent who raised them has decided to not tell them. -Hunter

2 Girls 1 Episode

I’m down for Centaur Xena ONLY if Gabrielle rides her. Otherwise DON’T PUT THIS OUT THERE LIKE THAT 😭 -Hunter

I also understand both Gabrielle's and Xena's point of views and dont think it was as clearly as cut & dry as Xena made the right decision to give solan up. Gabrielle's not the warrior Xena is, but I'd say she sees the world through a hero's perspective...much more than Xena even. Hot take possibly. That may be because she hasn't had the experience to be hurt and disenchanted yet, but still. I think Gabrielle has seen that Xena at her core is a good person despite her evil deeds, and is probably thinking 'whose to say Xena wouldn't have turned good earlier if she would have kept solan and done her absolute best making a good life for him'. I dont know if she's wrong. One of my favorite things about Xena & Gabrielle is how they view eachother. They always see more in echother than they see in themselves. They put eachother on such a pedestal.

2 Girls 1 Episode

This is true. I feel so much like Gabrielle in this episode. Especially when she’s talking to Solan and explaining to him how she doesn’t understand the hatred Xena gets. I feel that. Everyone just keeps telling me she was an eviiiiil bitch but until I see it I don’t believe it lol. I also always forget Gabrielle is very very young and hasn’t learned real world lessons yet while Xena has been through it all in the last 10 years. -Hunter

It’s funny what age does to the way you think about situations 😂 - Tash

Oh and by the way Hunter, loved your updated Season 1 top 5, and you're right.. those episodes are so much complex and layared narratively and character wise that it takes sinking in and rewatching them to fully appreciate their scope.. And that's gonna happen a lot more often moving forward 😁

Great reaction. It’s such a “wait, what? did I miss something??” moment 😂 as much as Gabrielle’s initial reaction frustrates me, it makes sense for the character. I like that we get to see more of Xena fumbling and being vulnerable and trying hard to still do the right thing, even when that means leaving Solan behind again. Echoing that same shot as 10 years prior, Xena basically near collapse at the devastation of it all, goes right to my heart. Also appreciate the updated rankings! Definitely need some time to think on them. I feel like 2-3 in a row is a decent amount, more than that it would all blur a bit, but with time to rewatch that helps. Looking forward to more of season 2!

I had a good old laugh in the last episode is there a doctor in the house, when hunter said “I hate centaurs” and I was like oh boy do they play a big role in the next episode.

MsMcGoo

The CGi doesn’t help with the way they look too.

Another great reaction! 😁 Just going to throw out the reminder that evil Xena's army threw her out for saving a baby in the 2nd Hercules ep she appeared in, The Gauntlet. That's one to have a rewatch of now you know she's been a mother this whole time. Also the exchange at the start of Cradle of Hope with Gab's disbelief a mother would give up her baby and Xena flatly replies 'maybe she had a reason.' Love to hear Hunter's thoughts on what The Great Borias was like. Couple of other random thoughts: There is a good reason the Ixion centaur at the end looks a bit Lord of the Ringsy... In about 3 years time that film project is going to arrive and take a lot of NZ talent including costume and make up people so there is definite overlap. I hadn't noticed until tonight but the way Xena describes her relationship with Borias to a child she is concealing it from is exactly the way the show describes her relationship with Gabrielle to the TV execs and members of the audience not familiar with subtext. Oh you were close friends hmmm 😜

Girl4Music

Xena always says she’s “close friends” with everyone whether she’s doing them or not. It’s just her thing.

Girl4Music

To be fair he doesn’t look anything like his father either.

mary smith

Ha. Solan does look much more like Gabrielle than Xena. Also the physics you and Tash were doing to figure out how Xena could have a 9-10yr old child was hilarous.

2 Girls 1 Episode

Bro I thought she was like 25 this whole time. I didn’t think she was a warlord for A DECADE 🫣 -Hunter

Girl4Music

What’s really interesting to me about this episode is Xena’s motivations contradicting her judgment. I mean she admits that she’s wrong for walking away from Solan when he was a baby but then she leaves again. True, he is well protected and has friends and family that she feels she doesn’t, but it’s still wrong to leave him behind. It’s still wrong to walk away. So I guess what Gabrielle and Solan talked about is subverted a little at the end ‘cause Gabrielle said that Xena always does what’s right even when it hurts her. This time she does what’s wrong but for the right reasons. And it still devastates her because she feels she still cannot claim Solan when she walked out on him originally all those years ago. It’s just interesting to have that conflicting contradiction in her character personality. But it makes sense because she’s always at war with herself above all else. She feels unworthy of him. She’s a very complex character, Xena is.

I loved Hunter's reaction to the big reveal so much! I don't know which one of you I admire more, Hunter for not cheating and watching ahead, or Tash for being able to keep your mouth shut about spoilers. I'm not sure I could do either one! And back to the subject of Xena's age, I really don't think there is any logical timeline for all her experiences, and we just have to sort of do a hand wave at the whole thing. However, while Lucy was about 25 when the show started, I've always thought of Xena as being around 28 or 29. That way she would have been 18 or 19 when her village was attacked and she started on her path to evil. That still leaves the problem that Solan is supposed to be 9, and we find out about at least a few years worth of stuff Xena did both before she hooked up with Borias and while she was with Borias, before Solan was born. So the timing just can't fit. Oh well, it is a fantasy show, right?

I also appreciated the revised top 5 episodes of season 1. All good choices by both of you. One episode that's on my list that didn't get mentioned is Sins of the Past. While it may not be one of the great episodes in term of plot, I think it does a very nice job of introducing the two main characters, giving the viewer an understanding of who they are and what their world views are, and beginning to establish their relationship. There are two moments that really stand out to me, and I think they're more impactful on a re-watch, after the viewer knows how the characters and relationship develop over the course of the show. The first is right after Gabrielle saves Xena in her mother's inn and Xena gets on her horse to ride off. Gabrielle comes running up insisting on being taken with her. Xena says no several times, but finally gives up and reaches her hand down to pull Gabrielle up behind her. To me, that moment is the real start of their relationship. And it captures so much about them. The reluctance of the hardened, guilt-ridden warrior to have any kind of personal relationship or to think she is worthy of having a friend, and Gabrielle's insistence and persistence, which almost always result in her getting her way in the end. The second is at the end, after Gabrielle has tracked Xena down and is convincing her that she should stay. There is this moment when sweet, adorable little Gabby leans forward so earnestly to explain herself to Xena, and she is just so precious that of course Xena has to agree. On the DVD audio commentary with Lucy and Renee, Lucy literally squeals with delight at that moment, "Look how young you are!!!" It's perfect.

2 Girls 1 Episode

Oh I MISS the days when they did commentary on dvds. Like that must’ve been so special as a fan to get. But yes that’s fair. I love Sins of the Past just because it’s the perfect series opener. So many good moments in it.

2 Girls 1 Episode

Let me tell you, it’s the hardest thing to do not to watch ahead or even watch videos that I see pop up on my timelines. I just keep reminding myself it’ll be worth it. And Tash has the stone face of a champion!!!

Leslie M

She really does!

The Xena DVDs are still available and they have some great audio commentaries (for 5-6 episodes each season, except season 1) and lots of other interviews and features. And unlike some commentaries I've watched, Lucy and Renee are prepared and take it seriously, so they provide good insights as well as fun.
