Oh yay the giant killer! Said no one ever 🤪 weakest episode of the season for me, but all that hand holding sure was awesome 😁😁 I personally like this season, and there's real crazy classic episodes to come, starting next episode 😁 still for me, season 3 and 4 are my favorites

The only thing I like in this episode is that Gabrielle gets friendzoned and then runs back to Xena.

... great reactions to a mostly forgettable episode 🤣 the x &g moments are the only reason to watch this one... but just speaking for me, if hunter doesn't lose her mind over at least one particular scene in the next episode, I will be utterly shocked, like, 😲 shocked beyond words... but there are at least 2 that I think that'll happen over... but yeah, this season gets much better after this - minus the Xena-lite episodes... but i'm an admittedly biased-towards-Xena fan ... also... for me, season 6 and 3 tie, 2, 4, 1 and 5... that's my rankings... and yet, season 5 has several of my most favorite episodes in it, but overall, nope -

"Also the fact that the writers wrote so many male love interests while putting all this lesbian subtext in the show" Yeah, but that's because they want to make it appear straight when they have absolutely no intention on making it straight. It's called straightbaiting. Opposite of queerbaiting. Which so many other shows would do,. Not Xena. Xena straightbaits. The lesbian subtext is far more authentic and natural than the straight stuff is. You know what is intended.

I think it goes 3, 6, 2, 1, 4 and 5 for me. 5 is easily the weakest season for reasons that couldn't really be helped. 4... I mean it's got a good concept but the execution is a little all over the place. The other seasons have at least 1 or 2 duds in them. This episode being a dud for Season 2. Really I think the only solid season all throughout is 3. 6... I mean it depends on if you like the finale or not. And 1 is too episodic to really stick.

Interesting question about what seasons people like. I think S2 is generally well regarded and after this yawnfest of a Bible story ep, there is a solid run of good eps for the next 10+ eps. Although some of my fave eps are in S5, I think most people would pick that as the weakest season of all because the quality pf eps varies enormously throughout and it has the worst ratio of good to not so good eps. They had to deal with a lot in S5, not least because the Lord of the Rings showed up and took away loads of people from the show. Crew, stunties, extras, costume designers, special effects people etc etc. In fact they couldn't keep both shows running, so they pulled the plug on Hercules which had long been eclipsed by Xena in the ratings anyway and pooled their resources into making Xena.

Hunter will not disappoint next ep, don’t worry hahaha - Tash

So, a big thing about the early seasons of Xena is that the studio, NBC/Universal, actually demanded that there were male love interests written for Xena and Gabrielle. From the beginning they were so scared that Xena would be seen as a lesbian show that they even demanded that Xena and Gabrielle never shared a scene in the opening credits. But, because Rob and the writers always entertained the idea of Xena and Gabs being a couple, they never let the love interest last more than an episode or two and that's how we got the "Boyfriend of the Week." There's even an episode later on where, through magical happenstance, the subtext would've been actual text, but the studio demanded a last minute rewrite and even the show's sponsor that week threated to back out if they didn't change it, so they did. 😢 I think it's funny that the 4th season is Tash's least favorite because it's my top favorite! I think it's because this season came out when I was 16. I see Xena WP in three stages: Season 1-2 is childhood, Season 3-4 as Puberty/Teenage Years, and Season 5-6 as Adulthood. I don't want to elaborate too much because my reasons have spoilers but maybe Tash can understand. Season 4 just hit me right in the teenage angst with how emo it was, dealing with feelings of destiny and sealed fate, not knowing if your on the right path and the impending harsh transition into adulthood, it just rang so true for me at the time. I even kind of felt alienated by season 5 and 6 because they had moved far passed where I was in life all culminating to Entertainment Tonight spoiling what was going to happen to Xena in the last episode and I got so mad that I refused to watch the finale and didn't see it until a year later. I enjoy seasons 5 and 6 now that I watch them as an adult but there's still a twinge of hurt that the show changed so much at a time in my life when I craved stability. I even side eye LOTR every once in while because of its part in it....😂

The handhold scene is one of my favorites from the series! That close up too 💕

Man my prediction for the Hunter rating was way off. I was too generous with the 7.5. I will say that season 2 has some of my all time favorite episodes. Tash is absolutely correct that the season really picks up after this.

I was really surprised to hear Tash say season 4 was her least favorite. I go back and forth whether 3 or 4 is my favorite. 4 has some clunkers, but the great ones are SO great. My current rating is 3, 4, 6, 2, 1 and 5. But 2 does have some really great episodes.

One interesting facet of Xena is the way our girls end up exposed to so many world religions. Of course the Greek gods play a huge role in the series and later we will get some of the Norse gods. But they also do a lot with Christianity, Hinduism, Taoism, Shamanism, Shintoism and, in the first two seasons, including this episode, Judaism. This caused them some controversy a time or two, but I appreciate that they took some chances that were really unheard of in 1990s US television. This episode (which, btw, I find kind of cringe-inducing) is about one of the major figures in the Hebrew Bible (called the Old Testament by Christians), David, who begins as a simple shepherd boy and becomes King of Israel. David was chosen by God to replace the failed King Saul (who also appears in this episode). David's status as the chosen future king is first shown in the Bible when the shepherd boy saves the Israelites by defeating the mighty Philistine giant Goliath with nothing but a slingshot. The phrase "David and Goliath" is a common metaphor for a fight or other struggle between someone or something who is very powerful and someone who is not considered to have a chance. David is also credited with having written the Book of Psalms in the Bible, which is a series of poems dedicated to God. In this episode he supposedly composes the 23rd Psalm, which is the most famous, and which I have heard read at every Jewish, Catholic or Protestant funeral I have ever been to, and even at a couple of more or less non-religious ones. But not the Buddhist one. (When you get to be in your 60s, you've been a lot of funerals!) As for David being flirty with Gabrielle, while engaged to another woman, that actually fits with the biblical David. After he became King, he got the hots for Bathsheba, a married woman, had an affair with her, got her pregnant and then arranged for her husband's death so he could marry her. And by the way, polygamy (for men) was perfectly fine in David's time, so he had many wives. Bottom line: Gabrielle had a very lucky escape.

I agree with you, for me 3 and 4 are peak Xena, then i would pair 6 and 2 for their fun wacky energy, then 1, and finally 5 as the weakest overall for having the most duds for me, but still it has some killer awesome episodes

This might be the most boring episode of the show. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some objectively worse episodes in the show, but they at least entertainingly bad. They just really didnt do anything interesting with the David & Goliath story. It was just too massive of a biblical story and too over done in media to just essentially rehash.

I also agree with Tash re Gabrielle. I think Gabrielle - to steal a twilight term- imprinted on Xena episode one but has no idea what that means yet. I think she thinks her feelings for xena are hero worship and bestfriend related. She is young and trying to figure herself out. That includes her romantic feelings and her spirituality. That last part is why I think she was partially so drawn to David. Favorite season for me depends on who im watching for. I think 2,3,4,6 are all similar good to me for different reasons so depends on my mood. Season 5 followed by season 1 for me. I think Season 2 is really good for xena's journey, season 3& 6 good for both, and 4 good for gabrielle's.

I like this episode. I think it was well produced and the story was interesting but I believe the problem was that Xena was out of the action on the final act. We need Xena to solve the problem at the end and originally this episode ends with Xena killing Gareth but the producers cut that footage because the episode was too long and that was a mistake.
