this page reminds me of when charlie was nervous to go on stage at the fete and looked around the curtain and pictured the bullies standing there but this time as much as he seems just as nervous he’s not having negative flashbacks which is a good improvement and i’m proud of him 🫶🏻

I do love the overall “this is really a big deal” aura of this page. Each panel has straight, contiguous borders (with none of our beloved doodles), making us feel the seriousness of the moment (for the candidates anyways!). Then, we have the fluctuations between the big picture of the waiting student body and the zoom in view of how Charlie is feeling. As expected, Charlie looks anxious and nervous (even with his fabulous new hair cut!). I most love the close up of Charlie in panel 2 . Even with the pressure and nerves, only half of Charlie’s face is shadowed. The other remains bright in the light. This feels so symbolic (to me) of how much Charlie has worked to handle hard things. It’s like he is balancing that hard, uncertain, dark emotion provoking things are going to happen, but now he has his own strength, self efficacy, and dreams (the light) to rely on to help him get through. In the past, the dark thoughts took over and everything became shadowy…but not today. Plus, we have the sweetest little lean in from Nick, checking in, reminding us all of the background support Charlie has from his boyfriend, his friends, his rugby mates, his sister and family, and all the young Truham students Charlie is speaking up for. You DO have this, Charlie. Step fully into the light, step up to that podium, and be yourself. It’s your time to shine❤️❤️‍🩹

I kinda love that Charlie got a haircut right before the big speech. 'Hair holds memories' it's almost, in a way, him letting go of what's happened to him. Not carrying those memories of being bullied or letting them burden him any longer, instead taking and using them as motivation to not let the same thing happen to anyone else. Striving for a safe environment for all where nobody should feel uncomfortable in who they are. Charlie you rockstar!! (Also two of the boys in the crowd kinda look like Christian and Otis.)
