So here’s my interpretation: I feel like Nick is compensating for his parents separating when he was a small boy… he doesn’t want that to happen to himself or anyone in his friend group cause it was obviously traumatic for him. So he’s convinced that love is enough to make a relationship work…. 🥺 I feel for him a lot, it’s very relatable!

I love this honestly. People tend to call Nick and Charlie super mature for the way they are communicating, and in some way they are. But they are still teens, and still have a looot of growing up to do. Because loving someone doesnt solve everything, and doesnt mean you wont separate. Life is not that easy. I actually dont fully know if he 100% believes what he is saying or if he is trying to convince himself of this as a form of denial with his current struggles and to reassure himself. He is building this little fantasy world around himself full of sunshine and rainbows. I feel like we are stepping in toxic positivity here, and he's not gonna be able to hold up the illusion in his head for much longer before he breaks I fear. A big bravo to Tao for answering in a calm but curt way and for not blowing up at a clearly hammered Nick (who I hope will learn a lesson about alcool cause he is gonna feel horrible the next day)

I find this page really upsetting. I get what folks are saying... Nick needs to work on himself and his relationship so it will actually last, being "in love" isn't enough, etc. But as someone who has actually been in a relationship for 30 years, married for 26, I think if Nick had said "if you love each other everything will be fine" that's actually true. Because to me real love is super forgiving and flexible and changes over time and prioritizes your partnership. And sometimes you only have 10% to give, and your partner gives 90%. And sometimes you give 90% while they give 10%. And that's not always easy, but it is simple. Because love is also work. And even though Nick doesn't totally get it right here, I still think he's more right than anyone else at that table in terms of knowing what it takes. And he and Charlie have already experienced love in hard times. And I think people like Nick who think love is this important are more likely to go the distance than those who think, well it's complicated and people change and circumstances change and and and... So, I know he needs to work on himself and his communication and his fears, but yeah. This page (and the friend group and the direction of folks' responses)... not my favorite.

I agree with you somewhat coming from the perspective of a long marriage, too. It does take work, because anytime two humans are in a close, constant relationship they are bound to hit up against the ways they are capable of annoying or disregarding or hurting one another, but I agree that there often is a simplicity to it. Not in every relationship all the time, but often the simple fallback to your commitment to one another is the answer. But I would also say that, for me, even though loving each other is the answer, it’s not the end of the matter. Falling back on that commitment usually means making a decision to talk to one another about the issue, or talk to someone else, or soften your perspective, or adjust to suit the new situation, or stand up for the way you need to be loved, or make an agreement about how to proceed. I agree that none of this HAS to feel complicated and sometimes happens quite naturally, but at least for me it’s not ALWAYS natural or easy. I feel like Nick is both right and wrong here. It really can be simple, but it may not always be THAT simple. And deep down, he knows that, because as you pointed out, this isn’t their first big challenge. We know he’s right that it WILL be fine eventually, and it will be fine because of their love and commitment to one another. But Nick is probably about to remember that there are follow-up actions that need to occur to make that love real in this case. He and Charlie are really good at those things, and they have lots of experience at acting on their commitment to one another to get through difficult times. Now they have a chance to get even better at it.

Well said! I agree with you. I just think drunk Nick is still more right than the rest of his friends realize... and sober Nick *might* explain that "easy" comment a bit more effectively. He still needs to do the work, but we always still need to do the work (understanding ourselves, moderating our responses, sharing our feelings, making room for one another). But the love part is central to it all. And I really hope Charlie gives him a big hug, because I feel like Nick is so very alone right now... no one else in today's scene seems to get it and it's driving me nuts! LOL

I love your use of the term “more right!” I think it’s so true! Honestly I’m not sure how much he is trusting his own statement at the moment, since he’s currently viewing his relationship through anxiety goggles. I think he’s scared to do the follow-up work at the moment because he’s still afraid any moment of tension will mean things aren’t “fine.” But we know they are, and I think this arc will teach him to trust it too. Deep down he already knows it.

Sparring with an inebriated teen is never advisable even if he is poking the bear, or the whole den, for that matter. Nick actually believes everything he is saying, drunk or not. "If you are in love, everything will be fine". Truth is, Charlie and Nick have caught lightening in a bottle with their relationship. There are people who go their whole lives without ever finding, feeling, and experiencing true love. N&C found true love, their soulmate, and first love, all at the same time. The love Nick has for Char is all encompassing euphoria. To Nick, the huge, massive force of true love, should be enough to solve everything. So, in fact, love is sort of blind. But (you knew the big "but" was coming), Nicky has already learned that this huge huge love he and Char have with each other was not enough to save Charlie with his mental health. The love he had for his father, was not enough to make dad stay. Down deep, he knows. Although the time and place are incredibly wrong, this moment has been building for quite some time. We should either brace ourselves for the next page, or let Nick go sleep it off in the back of the band van. Alice, we are in your hands...😰

It may be a good thing to have the friends a little more tuned into Nick's struggles. They have seemed removed from them and Nick's drunkenness is bringing them front and centre. This was much the case before when the friends were not aware yet of Charlie's struggles. This may help Charlie support Nick or have Nick feel love and supported as well. Both Tao and Elle are being much more mellow with him than I expected which is very kind of them. Tara as well as Aled are also being very observant of his anxiety in these moments. Charlie is about to walk back into this mess and Sarah or David will probably see the tail end of it. With so many witnesses, I'm hoping Nick will realize everything is not fine and begin a self discovery and self help arc ❤️‍🩹

100%, i always viewed Nick as someone that could lean into toxic positicity bcs of the way he regards life and has a very hopeful diminure lol. Anyway, it rubs the wrong way when people regard them as if they already were a functional marriage when they are only 16/18 and have a loooot of growth to do still. Life is pretty messy, and life circumstances get in the way as well, but that doesn’t mean they can not solve it together. I think they are allowed the benefit of the doubt since they are teens, and have still a long way to go.

Oh my god! So today is the 1000st day since I'm an heartstopperfan!! 🥹🤩❤️ I watched it the day it came out (❣️22.04.2022❣️) finished it in one setting and afterwards I immediately thought: "Okay, I'm gonna watch that again - NOW" 😅🤩 It is the best day, which changed my life forever❣️🥰 And it took me way too long to discover, that Heartstopper is originally comic based! I think love is, of course, critical, but it didn't save Charlie from a mental health crisis, and it won't save Tao and Elle from the very real disagreement they have, even if they had the most mature conversations ever. Though I think one shouldn't get into the habit of only yelling or being upset with each other, it also isn't healthy to ignore real tensions. Also, I agree that, at this point Nick is trying to convince himself more than anyone else. And I feel for Tara, trying to take care of one of her besties, but he is past being able to use reason.

Oh drunk Nick. You should really sit down. I have a feeling he's going to go outside in his drunken state and "help" load instruments in the van and break one of them. That may cause the conflict with Charlie and his band mates. Which lead to sloppy drunken apologies and arguments about being so drunk but hey, such is life!!! This is all so painful for Nick. He is such a people pleaser and he just got sort of reprimanded (deservedly!) by Tara who is a friend he really respects. I don’t think Nick is used to saying the wrong thing and he probably was really embarrassed being called out like that by Tara (and yet is also probably not processing everyone’s reactions to him clearly bc of course he’s drunk). Whatever else happens now, he’s probably going to wake up and remember at least bits and pieces of it all and will probably feel so embarrassed and upset. Such a terrible feeling. 😭

My world has been super hectic the last week so I have been saving up looking at Alice' s patreon as my "reward" for getting through the day. It's good motivation to get shit done!

This page with its wavy, irregular borders, the floating bubbles (always make me think Nick is hiccuping, lol), another empty glass for Nick (I swear he has to throw up at some point), their friend group all back at the booth trying to patiently wait for Charlie and the band to pack up, with everyone else CLEARLY aware of Nick's verrrrrry tipsy state...isn't just the way pub nights can end up, with a WTF is going on moment?! Nick started out happy and festive, ready to support his hot, drummer boyfriend...and then in the space of many pints and multiple shots, he lost track and his intoxication level caught up to him. You can really see it in that top panel as he looks like he is yelling to get his point across, which is not very Nick like. He is somehow sweet and heartbreaking here, and comes across as obtrusive to Tao and Elle, but to me, he seems to be actually pleading...for love to conquer all. He's essentially, "just listen to me, if you two are in love, it's going to be fine! It will all be fine! Charlie is going to be fine. I love him! He loves me! He will be fine. I am going to be fine, too, right? Charlie loves me so I will be fine. ARE YOU LISTENING? You have to be fine because I don't really know if I am going to be fine without Charlie, and if you two love each other and aren't fine, my whole belief that we are in love and will also be fine is shattered and I want us to be fine. We have to be fine. I don't know how to be if I am not fine. I've always been fine, but now I only feel fine with Charlie. Love is what makes me fine and you fine, right?! Listen to me!" Sweet boy, he is hanging on to his well practiced (since childhood) mantra, "i'm fine" but everything is a bit mixed up in his inebriated state so he is hyperfixated on that one thing: WE ALL HAVE TO BE FINE. Tara being Tara and a good friend redirects him and asks about Charlie...which causes Nick to pause and (slightly) reflect, as we see in that third panel of just him looking down and blushing...whether from his ranting, the alcohol, or hearing Charlie's name (likely a combo). I can tell he IS pretty drunk here because we usually see the background go dark when Nick goes "inside" his head for a minute, yet it doesn't change here...but his one thing to hyperfixate on does to CHARLIE! Must help Charlie...but Nick, sweet love, you haven't stood up for awhile, you haven't had any food or water all night, and you have wavy motion around you...all signs that you aren't so steady on your feet. Be careful, love. Even Aled is flushing with worry...

The foot is still firmly in the mouth. I know Nick is trying to help, but the alcohol is definitely not helping. Likely making Nick mess up his words/message, along with having driven him to step into the middle of someone else's argument while it's still a sore point and being loud about it. Booze can make all issues seem simple, along with putting you foot in your mouth and your brain into dumb dumb mode. I can't blame Tao for being annoyed, Tara's call to chill or Aled's worried face in the last panel. I get the feeling Nick is going to end up face down on the floor, hopefully not breaking something while doing it.

Nick's inner thoughts are just as I imagined them to be. Love MUST fix it all, right? But love isn't enough sometimes, and Nick is going to understand that soon I am afraid. I love how this story line, and especially this scene, is kind of in direct communication with fan perceptions of N&C being “perfect” and we now we get to see all the very realistic nuances - very genius storytelling!!
