I know there've been lots of people outside the UK chuckling in the comments about how this isn't really that long a drive, but there are a few things to consider here: the most N&C would be able to see each other would be at the weekends, and realistically, due to work and social commitments, that's not going to be possible. They'll be going from seeing each other every day to seeing each other every couple of weeks, maybe, if they're lucky and have the money for petrol or a train fare (which is expensive!). Thinking about how N&C's relationship has been for the past year, that's a really huge change for both of them!

I know Charlie needs to see that he can do exciting things and be happy about that without Nick, and Nick needs to see that’s it okay that he misses events- even biggish ones. I know they’ll be okay. But it’s hard and it can be sad.

I went to college a four hour drive from home and I definitely couldn't afford to come home every weekend. Unless you're wealthy it's too much. Plus, you'll be exhausted come Monday.

I assumed they wouldn’t see each other every weekend. Only every couple of months

Hope you are well Alice. Rest up ❤️

Which is why it is absurd that Nick goes so far away. Stay close to home or take a gap year.

It's not an absurdly long distance in terms of continents or whatever, but in terms of being able to see each other, it's a huge change, and we know there is turmoil to come. I feel a bit sad already that this story arc is leading to the final of Heartstopper. ❤️

When I was a little older them them, I dated someone in Leeds, whilst living about as far away as Kent was, (just the other side of the South) - we saw each other maybe once every few months, for longer during breaks, but as they got more into Uni life they stayed in the city more often during the shorter holidays. It is incredibly expensive for two young people to see each other often at that distance in the UK, especially if they're students (rail travel is not cheap here, even with student cards), and petrol is not cheap.

This brings back memories from when my partner and I went from seeing each other every day in sixth form, to going to university a four hour train ride apart. We saw each other about once a month when we could afford it. It's HARD! This is such a difficult situation to be in 😭 but three years later we now live together and it's amazing, things will work out for Nick and Charlie!! ❤️

I really feel for Nick, he has to go to the Uni that’s right for him but he also doesn’t want to be so far from Charlie. But he has to remember Charlie will only be in Kent for one more year himself. However hard it’s going to be, he has to do what’s right for him.

zara ahmed !!

even if it was cheap, it’d be impossible to see each other every week. if they got a weekend job, had coursework etc. university and a levels take a lot of your time!

Charlie ultimately goes to university in London, so even after a gap year one of them would always have to have sacrificed their choice of university
