Noah, The final Rs in German actually do get cut off like that. There's no rhotic in -er, just a guttural/uvular vibration following a schwa (like you're swallowing the schwa... Swallowing the the Schwa, my new self-help book). so the common -e and -er endings are damn near indistinguishable in most dialects. Despite that nice simplification with endings, the voiced uvular R was a motherfucker of a phoneme to learn. Arnie's accent is bizarre even to most Germans and Austrians. He's from an area where they speak a particularly odd variety of Southern Austro-Bavarian. It's a nice illustration of how arbitrary the line between language and dialect can be. English Lisa broke/has broken her leg. Standard German Lisa hat sich das Bein gebrochen. Bavarian D'Lisa/As Liasal håd se an Hàxn/Hàx brocha. Austrian D'Lisa/'s-Liasl håd se an Hàxn brochn/brocha.

I live by hospital (cancer centre door) and I purposely 'cough' when I see people smoke, particularly loud when they are wearing scrubs. Also 'cough' when people smoke infront of no smoking signs. Actually, I'm asthmatic, I just cough a lot.
