Hey, patrons!

As you may have noticed, there are approximately a dozen ways in which people try to reach us -- individually on Facebook and Twitter, at the official podcast accounts, here on the Patreon page, and so on.  We depend on your feedback for our "Listener Feedback" section, and we love the idea of creating a community of Scathing Atheist, GAM, and Skepticrat listeners where you can interact with us and each other. So what we'd like to know from you is how you'd like to see that community take shape.  Our initial thoughts are either (1) a wall/chatroom/message board hosted on our webpage, or (2) a Facebook group, something like "The Scathing Atheist Community."Which of these would you prefer?  Or, if you have a better idea for all of us to stay in touch with each other, please share it below.Thanks!-Noah, Heath, and Eli

A slack would be great.

Pandora

You could be totally lazy and just do a subreddit. Works for cognitive dissonance.

Jen B.

A FB group would be great, as long as it's private.

Natasha Wilding

For simplicity, a Closed Facebook group seems logical to me. A lot of us are probably on there already, and it would save going to a different site.

Donovan "Ravenhull"

Personally, I find forums easier to navigate and find threads and such, but FB is easier to find and join...

John Copeland

Message board. Facebook is in the toilet these days.

John Copeland

Facebook is too hard to keep track of threads.

Daniel Kirsten

There are free forum options out there. And as Facebook is free you could do that in conjunction with other things.

Trixie

Forum. Facebook doesn't really let you have ongoing conversations and threads. A forum really does foster community.

Skeptic Sarah

I would prefer to see it be on some platform that the Scathing Atheist community owns instead of something like facebook or reddit. If you need help running a forum hit me up.

Simo Hyttinen

Facebook for convenience. I don't really like forums because of the inconvenient user experience.

Bram Kaandorp

A Google+ community? But seriously now, a forum would be great, because it wouldn't be linked to any service whose privacy policy might change.

Andrew Elliot

It seems like a subreddit would be the easiest option.

Breeding McNery

I would prefer on your site. I am always a dumbass away from deleting my facebook account.

James C.

Definitely a forum. Facebook has poor thread organization but it would still be nice to have a Facebook group to combine the podcasts under one roof.

Boomclaw the Twice-Dead Kobold

Message board or forum. I know Facebook has private groups, but I'm not always sure who can see what. I'd rather not let some of my family know I'm listening to atheist podcasts.

James Larner

Whichever gives the easiest way for people to post movie review suggestions and have them voted on/up/down!

Steiner!!!

Scathing Atheist Chain-Letter?

Nope

Puzzle In a Thunderstorm community forum. The PIT. No Facebook

Michelle C

Facebook would be best for me. I don't really want to have to join yet another website and probably won't participate in a forum or subreddit.

Patrick Walters

I personally would say Facebook. But I would be willing to learn how to use a forum. I'm technologically stupid.

GeekOfDoom

I would have to side with the Forum. Haven't been on Facebook for months, and I really would not like to go back.

Renrag

However is most convenient for you. I WILL FIND YOU! 😀

Deadeye Nick

Please please please no Facebook!

Retro Rabbit Hole

I'd prefer a forum too. If useful, my job is to look after internet facing services I wouldn't mind at all to offer my services for the cause! Let me know if that's useful for you.

Michael Weston

I'm a Luddite I know how Facebook works, it's not a lot of work to use. What the fuck is a wall, other that in a house?

Bram Kaandorp

A mobile app would definitely be useful. Anything to make it easier to use on a phone/tablet, so that my PC doesn't have to be on in the summer. Too few forums I participate in actually do this.

MrsFiendish

I detest Facebook so would definitely prefer a forum. Then I wouldn't have to wade through the pages of old school friends telling me how much exercise they've just done so they've earnt their glass of wine. Smug gits :)

Mr Pudifoot

Personally I don't like using Facebook, i would prefer a forum on your site or a subreddit

Christopher Arguin

Send Eli door to door. He can cure cases of chronic Lyme disease while he is there.

Bram Kaandorp

Yeah, I like Tapatalk as well. Not all the forums I partake in support it, though.

John Copeland

Facebook is a poor forum tool. Only shows most recent posts so you have to go through the rigmarole of selecting "show older posts" to get to the point of the argument.

Taylor

I would like a *private* Facebook group, please. Or Christopher's door-to-door idea.

Patrick Bracken

I'd prefer a message board on your webpage.

Cynthia Abawi

Here in Utah, I can't be "out" as it would hurt my business. An open facebook page would not be something I could participate in.

Tom jackson

I'm not on Facebook because my family members are a bunch of religious zealots. I would say the website is the best bet. Unless you want to come to my house and hang.

Steiner!!!

Website. My friends list is tired of the religious memes I post on Facebook so limiting my dependence to it is preferred.

Douglas

Message / chat board would be my vote, maybe a 'live' chat during broadcast. (FB is so 2015).

David Grim

Maybe a closed Facebook group for those not out to the public?

Jay

The slack idea is pretty great. Or generic forum.

zedd_d1abl0

First: Tapatalk works with phpBB, a free and fairly good bid of forum software. Second: It could set it up in about an hour. It wouldn't take much to do. And you can easily show premium supporter with different forum stuff like names and decorations, etc. Mods can be part of the community and you'd have full control over what happens. AWS for hosting would maybe be $20 a month. Third: Have you thought of inviting other podcasts and making this a really big forum. People like Cognitive Dissonance and The Bible Reloaded. Maybe organise a collective of like-minded podcasts and have a really big forum.

Justin B

A closed facebook group would be nice.

Rachel

I also vote for Facebook group

Vanessa Moses

I like the idea of a chat room but a fb group would work too. Either way as long as we can be able to have conversations with you guys. Also I think I'm falling in love with Heath but don't tell him that he might find where I live.

Anne of Beeves

Closed facebook groups tend to go all Lord of the Flies without constant moderation. If you go that way, get several volunteers. Don't add that chore to your plate.

Matthew Maxon

Closed FB for patrons but you gotta have several mods to keep the group in line a bit. One of them should be the designated as the main fan mod.

Tomble

A sub reddit would be the go. But it would need active moderation no matter what you choose, you need mods to keep people from being shit to each other. No matter how nice you think we all are, we WILL disappoint.

Ariel Kahrmann

I would love a private group so that my religious family members can't look up my posts.

Max Fisher

Something like slack would be cool

Irene Johnson

I'd prefer a closed Facebook group. Yes, with moderators and the option to report posts to them, if someone goes off the rails. Post reasonable discussion rules (such as no bullying or whatever) and choose moderators that aren't afraid to be strict about them.

Lachlan Clark

A subreddit on Reddit would be pretty good!

uisge

Slack would be awesome. Not everyone wants to join Facebook.

Jen B.

Don't know if his wife would be into that, unless she went too?

Lyn Stoelwinder

Personally, I'd like a daily Skype session where we communicate through the medium of interpretive dance. Or a forum on the website.

Liz Rosenberg

I still like the interpretive dance idea best.

ZombieShock

Personally, I find interpretive dance to be a poor form of communication. It is too ambiguous and open to interpretation.

Hazel

I'd prefer facebook because I do a lot of surging from my phone, and the native interface is decent. If not, I'd join a subreddit, sure, but we could also go back to just using the pornhub comments.

Coen de Bruijn

I would say a Forum or the website (works for Atheistically Speaking)

James R Miles

Anything but Facebook. I prefer Reddit.

Savoir Fae

I think a chatroom/message board works best. As you have pointed out numerous times, some people are not entirely open about their lack of religious affiliation. And what with FB consistently changing and updating the way its Privacy settings work, I think the likelihood of a family member or other person finding the FB page and 'outing' a person who has kept their atheism secret till now is just too high. Especially for fans from strict religious families, or in other countries where the majority of the community observes a specific religious doctrine, this could have some pretty negative consequences. To avoid this, they would be forced to not participate at all...And that would be just plain sad.

Corey

A closed Facebook group would be nice. Reddit would be my second choice.

Joseph Stricklin

I like the idea of a message board of sorts. Posts and things get lost very easily on facebook and just pushed down. A place where we could easily reference old topics or discussions would be nice..

Ray Hendrickson

I think a closed Facebook group would work best. I ran scheduled chats on AOL for many years and it is a pain to find days and times that everyone can make for chats. Non scheduled chat rooms tend to be empty. Message boards help but tend to be harder to use than Facebook message threads. All of the above need some sort of moderation or trolls will take them over. A private Facebook group would be an easy way to deal with this problem.

Ray Hendrickson

Sorry for the second post, but in thinking about it I think the choice between Facebook, Reddit or a web page with chats and message boards depends on what you are trying to establish. If you want a place where there are discussions of random subjects Facebook would work well. If your idea is to set up an online community the chat/message boards works well. The later takes much more work. Scheduled chats need to happen when scheduled and should be built around topics with a chat leader who researches the topic and has topics on the subject to move the chat along. Message boards need to be watched and topics developed that people want to post to. Some message boards can be everything goes some geared more to support. Whichever way you go you will need some rules of the road so those who lead chats or monitor the message boards have guidelines everyone agrees to. And these will be tested lol.

Emily Fuller

I prefer Facebook, because it works well on my phone, meaning I can keep up to date anywhere and any time

TheOldDruid

In order of preference: Forum, Private Subreddit, Closed Facebook Group... I hate how FaceBook and Reddit favor trend over substance, but at least with Reddit you can change your display preferences.

Andrew Brown

Bulletin Board managed on your website should be easiest way to reach the creator.
