The instrument the old man is playing near the beginning, when they get to the hostel, is actually an oud, not a mandolin. It's a North African/Arabic instrument and is an early precursor to the modern guitar. And he's not playing it badly, middle eastern tonal systems have quarter tones that often sound "out of tune" to Western ears. Oud music is actually really damn cool.

I play oud. It sounds weird cuz westerners took the easy route and did everything in equal tempermant. So if you didn't grow up being exposed to else(there's some slavic folk music that this applies to that I heard a lot as a kid cuz Ukrainian and Belarusian extended fam). Brandon Acker on YouTube has a good intro video on the oud with good recommendations

The oud is such a fascinating musical link between the Arabic/Islamic world and the Iberian peninsula. Really pretty stuff.

Also, my understanding of the history of the different tonal systems is that the hellenic lutes and lyres were based on mathematical subdivisions of lengths of string. As the intellectual strength of the Hellenes faded, those traditions were carried eastward into Asia, and they continued to experiment with the math, and lengths of string, to get different frequencies and more notes.

It has ties to a lot of different cultures. The tie to my slavic forebears comes from when Muslims were taking slavic women to be sold as concubines from the areas around Kiev in the early years before the Varangians came. We don't have oud music specifically...but oud can play our music very easy because we picked up some of the musical styles.

I just don't see the point of pointing that out on what was basically a very silly way to say that Andrew is at his comedic best when he's the middleschooler at the high school party smoking weed for the first time with the older kids. I find it hysterically and adorably funny.

No it's more reasonable than mine. Get heath high and drag him to a busy dog park. Yours is doable. Mine is not. I just wanna see a Dog mob with loud squeaks coming from somewhere in the center though.
