I will say, there are actually some examples of Oliver and Barry being told that they don't have what it takes or shouldn't be a hero yet/at all. For Barry, it wasn't much, just Joe in the first couple of episodes, and Wells telling him to stop playing hero and focus on doing tests and getting faster "for science". Oliver actually has more examples, but you're looking at the wrong time period. When he became a vigilante in Starling City in season 1, he had actually already had 5 years worth of training beforehand. On the island, he had a couple of people who told him that he didn't have what it takes. Yao Fei at first didn't believe he could survive when Oliver refused to kill the bird. Slade also didn't believe he stood a chance at surviving when he first met Oliver. I will say that you get a bit more of it in Supergirl, but I think that it comes in part from the writers over on CBS for the first season of Supergirl. I do think that they overdue the constant comparisons to Supergirl.
