Astrid Hofferson was Berk’s untouchable storm, a whirlwind of axe blades and blonde braids, her icy blue eyes sharp enough to cut through dragon hide. But beyond the training grounds and the roar of battle, she kept a secret sanctuary: a flower garden tucked against the cliffs, where the wind carried salt and the earth cradled her softer rebellion. It began as a child’s defiance—her mother scoffed at dirt-stained hands, insisting a warrior had no time for fragile things. Yet Astrid, even then, saw power in the delicate, in coaxing life from rocky soil where others saw only barrenness.

By nineteen, the garden was her haven, a riot of color against Berk’s gray stone. Wild roses climbed trellises she’d hammered herself, their thorns a match for her own edge. Lavender swayed in the breeze, its scent clinging to her skin when she shed her armor after a raid. She’d kneel there at dusk, leather skirt hiked up, sweat tracing the curve of her neck as she tended her blooms—fingers deft with a trowel as they were with a blade. The village whispered she was softening, but those who dared spy caught a different tale: Astrid, barefoot and sun-kissed, humming low as she crushed petals for salves, her lips stained red from testing a berry’s ripeness.

The garden wasn’t just beauty—it was her alchemy. She’d learned the old ways from Gothi, the village elder, blending herbs into potions that could mend a warrior’s wounds or quicken a lover’s pulse. Hiccup stumbled on her once, mid-experiment, her hair loose and wild, a streak of pollen dusting her cheek. She’d smirked, offering him a vial with a teasing, “Drink this, and you’ll fly without Toothless.” He blushed, and she laughed—a sound rare as summer on Berk, warm and dangerous.

Her flowers weren’t tame. Foxglove grew in shadowy corners, its beauty a poison she’d mastered for tipped arrows. Night-blooming jasmine twined around a dragon skull she’d claimed as a trophy, its fragrance heavy and hypnotic, a lure she’d never admit drew her there on restless nights. She’d sit against that skull, legs stretched out, tracing petals with calloused fingers, plotting her next move—be it a raid or a way to keep Berk’s wild heart beating.

Astrid’s garden was her paradox: a warrior’s refuge, a temptress’s playground. She’d emerge from it with dirt under her nails and a glint in her eye, ready to spar with Hiccup or stare down a storm. The blooms bent to her will, just like the dragons she’d tamed, and in their quiet sway, she was every inch the Viking queen—fierce, untamed, and a little too lovely to resist.
