The jungle was thick with steam and secrets.

Rain pattered down through the cracked stone canopy of an ancient ruin, soaking Lara’s torn top, the fabric clinging to every curve as she crouched low, her breath shallow from the chase. A fresh scratch lined her cheek, but she barely noticed. She was too used to danger—too used to solitude. And today, both were being tested.

Lara Croft had spent weeks pushing through hostile terrain in the heart of the Yucatán, chasing whispers of a lost temple rumored to house a pre-Mayan artifact of seduction and power. It was a solo mission—her kind of mission—until he showed up.

Kellan was supposed to be just another competitive archaeologist, hired muscle for a rival institution. But when he rescued her from a collapsing rope bridge and then dared to flirt with her—with her—he became something else. Something much harder to shake.

And now, as she pressed her back against a damp, mossy pillar, dripping wet and breathless, she caught the glint of his silhouette through the archway—shirt plastered to his chest, soaked from the downpour, eyes locked on hers.

“I thought you worked alone,” he said, voice husky and low.

“I do,” Lara murmured, but her smirk betrayed her.

The tension between them had simmered for days, but now, in the rain-soaked hush of the ruins, with their bodies cut, mud-slicked, and heaving from the fight, it snapped. He stepped closer, hands raised in mock surrender, his touch respectful but bold as his gaze fell to the tear in her top.

“I’ll let you lead,” he said.

“You already followed me this far,” she countered, voice softening. “Might as well see where it goes.”

She turned her back on him deliberately, crossing a shallow stream that ran through the temple floor, her soaked shorts riding higher with each step. She could feel his eyes on her, trailing up and down, heat rising despite the cool rain. When she reached the altar, she paused, glancing over her shoulder.

“You coming?” she asked, and it wasn’t really a question.

What followed wasn’t reckless—it was electric. The artifact they sought pulsed between them, long forgotten, but suddenly less important than the chemistry unraveling in whispers, in glances, in touches not yet made. Lara let herself feel something besides adrenaline for the first time in months.

The jungle hid many secrets, but the most dangerous one that day was the way he made her feel… exposed and alive, all at once.

And as night fell and the monsoon deepened, Lara Croft didn’t run from the storm.

She welcomed it.
