The night air outside the garage was heavy with summer heat — the kind that clung to skin and made the asphalt shimmer. The city’s hum echoed faintly beyond the alley, but here, in this little corner of rust and gasoline, time moved slower.

Shank leaned against her bike, one boot resting on the peg, the other pressed into the floor like she was daring the world to move first. Her jacket hung loose on her shoulders, the red hood peeking out like a memory of rebellion. Every breath carried a trace of oil and smoke — the scent she’d come to associate with survival.

And yet, for once, survival didn’t feel like enough.

She had built her name on control — the way she handled a curve, the way she never flinched when the world threw sparks her way. But control had started to feel like armor, and lately, she was tired of armor.

He was the only one who ever noticed the cracks. The way she lingered a little too long at the end of a race. The way her fingers trembled when she killed the engine. He never tried to fix her — he just stood beside her, quiet and steady, letting the silence fill the gaps between them.

Now, in that same garage lit by a single flickering bulb, he was there again. Not saying much, not needing to. The air buzzed between them like static before a storm.

Shank turned her head, eyes catching the light, her lips curving into that half-smile — the one that could mean trouble or truth, depending on who was watching. She didn’t step forward; she didn’t have to. The distance between them pulsed with its own rhythm.

She spoke low, voice rough with heat and honesty.“Funny thing about racing,” she said. “You can go your whole life chasing speed and never realize the best part is when you finally stop.”

He smiled — small, knowing, patient.

The moment stretched. Somewhere outside, thunder rolled. Inside, her heart raced like an engine revving too high.

When he reached out, fingers brushing her wrist, Shank didn’t pull away. For the first time in a long time, she let herself be still.

Her gaze softened. The edge in her melted into something warmer — something that scared her more than any crash ever could.

He looked at her the way light looks at glass — like he could see everything inside her and still think it was beautiful.

And for once, Shank didn’t hide.

She leaned in, letting the sound of the storm blur into the sound of her heartbeat. The city outside roared, but in here, all that existed was the soft rhythm of two people standing still — a spark suspended in the space between danger and desire.

Because love, for someone like Shank, was never about surrender. It was about finding someone brave enough to ride alongside her — and steady enough to hold her when the road ran out.
