They dressed her in silk and lace and called her a lady.

The pale yellow gown was cut low enough to steal the breath of every man in the garden, the bodice laced so tightly it lifted and framed her full breasts with every slow breath. Layers of ruffled cream fabric whispered around her hips as she walked, the hem brushing the stone path. White lace gloves climbed her forearms. A delicate turquoise pendant rested in the deep valley of her cleavage. In one hand she carried a frilled parasol that cast soft shadows across her face and the long fall of black hair down her back.

But the wild never left her eyes.

Even standing beneath the white stone arches with fountains sparkling behind her, she moved like something that had once run barefoot through forests. The tribal markings on her upper arms peeked from beneath the lace of her gloves whenever she shifted. The corset might have forced her posture upright, but the sway of her hips still carried the memory of riverbanks and open sky. When the breeze caught the open neckline of the gown, the soft swell of her breasts rose and fell in a way no English lady was supposed to notice.

She had learned their manners. She had learned how to tilt the parasol just so, how to smile without showing too many teeth, how to let the fabric of the skirt trail behind her like a promise. Yet every time she paused by the fountain and let the sunlight catch the sheen of her skin, the men watching forgot the language of court entirely. The wild girl was still there — only now she wore it in silk, and she knew exactly what she was doing.

The dress was English.

The woman wearing it was not.
