Yuffie Kisaragi had stolen plenty of things in her life. Materia, priceless treasures, the occasional unattended wallet. But somewhere along the way, the notorious Wutai ninja had discovered something considerably more entertaining than stealing valuables: getting under someone's skin.

Especially yours.

The tropical hideaway was supposed to be a temporary stop between missions. A secluded paradise surrounded by emerald jungle, hidden waterfalls, and warm ocean breezes. No Shinra soldiers, no monsters, and, most importantly, nobody telling Yuffie what she could or couldn't do.

For once, she intended to enjoy herself.

You found her leaning against the wooden doorway of a private beachside cabana, looking suspiciously pleased with herself. Her familiar green headband and oversized goggles were still perched above her short brown hair, but she'd traded her usual ninja outfit for a bright orange bikini top and white shorts.

Her skin glistened with water from a recent swim, and a few damp strands of hair clung to her cheeks. She looked perfectly comfortable, enjoying the afternoon sunshine with the kind of effortless confidence that made it difficult to remember just how dangerous she could be.

"Took you long enough," she greeted you, tilting her head.

You reminded her that she'd disappeared without telling anyone where she was going.

"Yeah, well, I figured you'd find me eventually." Her lips curved into a mischievous smile. "You're getting pretty predictable, you know."

You glanced toward the beach, where her clothes and equipment lay scattered beside a suspiciously expensive-looking bottle of sunscreen.

"Did you steal that?"

Yuffie followed your gaze.

"Borrowed."

"From who?"

"Someone who wasn't using it."

You laughed, and she gave you a satisfied little grin before pushing herself away from the doorway.

For someone who could move across rooftops without making a sound, Yuffie had an extraordinary talent for making her presence impossible to ignore. She wandered past you toward the open veranda, then glanced back when you didn't immediately follow.

"What? You're just gonna stand there?"

You asked what she had planned.

"Nothing." She shrugged. "That's kind of the point."

It was an unfamiliar answer from a girl who usually had three schemes running simultaneously.

She settled onto the wooden railing, swinging one leg idly as she watched the sunlight dance across the water. For a while, neither of you said anything. The jungle hummed with insects, and the distant surf filled the comfortable silence.

Then Yuffie looked sideways at you.

"You know what's weird?"

You waited.

"I'm actually having a pretty good time."

"That sounds terrible."

"Shut up." She laughed, nudging your arm with her shoulder. "I'm serious."

Her expression softened just a little.

"Usually I'm thinking about the next mission, the next piece of materia, or how much money I can squeeze out of everybody." She paused. "But right now? I don't really wanna be anywhere else."

You told her that was probably the nicest thing she'd ever said to you.

"Don't get used to it."

Yet she didn't look away.

The afternoon breeze stirred her hair, and she reached up to adjust her goggles, suddenly looking almost shy. It lasted barely a second before her familiar mischievous expression returned.

"Besides," she added, "I haven't decided whether you're useful enough to keep around."

You asked what would convince her.

Yuffie pretended to consider the question.

"Well, you could start by buying me dinner."

"And then?"

She smiled.

"Guess you'll have to find out."

With that, she hopped down from the railing and started toward the beach, leaving you standing in the doorway.

A few steps later, she stopped.

"Hey."

You looked up.

Her smile was smaller this time, but somehow more genuine.

"I'm glad you came."

Then, apparently embarrassed by her own sincerity, she immediately added, "And don't make it weird!"

She turned and hurried toward the water, laughing as you followed.

For once, Yuffie Kisaragi wasn't chasing treasure, escaping trouble, or planning her next great heist.

She'd found something she wanted to stay for.

And although she'd never admit it out loud, the most valuable thing on that entire island wasn't hidden in a treasure chest.

It was the person she'd been hoping would follow her there.
