We're catching up on 2024 releases we've missed with our dear beloved patrons with a first-time watch of one of the most intense movies we've seen this year, I SAW THE TV GLOW! Mr. Melancholy has nothing on us as we navigate this heartbreaking tale of nostalgia, acceptance and fear, one Pink Opaque episode at a time... 📺🌝💖🍦✨

I'm so glad y'all got to this! Pressing play immediately.

Not even 10 minutes in and I'm laughing. Yes, that is how we used to vote. Into the booth, close the curtain with a big handle, push down all the small levers with your choices, and then pull the big handle again and it would register your vote and open the curtain. Honestly a much more dramatic way to vote than what we do now. Kind of miss it, TBH. What can I say? I enjoy anything with a bit of flourish and drama. 🤪 I don't know how to clip (probably because the first time I voted it was in one of the booths shown in the movie) but if you skip to about the 2:30 mark on this video you will see how it worked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYKVa5LpR1Q And just for the record, NO, I was not alive in 1957, but it was the only clip I could find that showed how those old voting booths worked. 😂

Favorite movie of the decade so far.

It was really awesome watching this with you for the first time. This story is definitely about being on the spectrum. Probably One of the only depictions of autism in media that I can actually relate to or I feel is more representative than a lot of other media. 💖💖💖

Wow! That was amazing. The last 10 minutes ripped my heart out of my chest. It took me forever to recognize that the actor playing Maddy played Casey on "Atypical." They look so different, but their voice was nagging at me the whole time I was watching until I finally realized.

A24 allowed Jane to commission a 15 track original soundtrack, so Jane pretty much handpicked all of these artists. It’s so cool.

The director has said the main message of the film is regarding the “egg crack” moment when you realize you’re trans/don’t identify with your assigned gender, but I absolutely think your interpretation is part of it as well. I got my autism diagnosis very recently and am also gender non-conforming, and this movie spoke to me very deeply. I love seeing different interpretations, I think it makes the movie a richer experience on rewatch ❤️

Sabrina

Can’t wait to watch this after I get back from seeing Wicked this afternoon! 💚🩷

Veronica

100% I agree that first and foremost it's definitely a trans story but I related very deeply to Owen. ❤️

Sabrina

same! The last 10 minutes had me so emotional for Owen, such a relatable character on so many levels ❤️

Sabrina

Claw Machine by Sloppy Jane ft Phoebe Bridgers is indeed on streaming! The music in this film is amazing, there are several amazing original songs that fit the vibe of the movie and also are great on their own

A (kinda) brief rundown of my interpretation: I don’t think it matters whether the pink opaque is “real” or not because the “real” world in this film seems just as bizarre/nightmarish. At least the pink opaque feels real to Owen and Maddy, and that’s what truly matters. I think Owen lied about having a family, based on the fact we don’t see any of them, his face drops after he says it, and then he lugs the flatscreen inside by himself. I also think the passage of time in the movie is very subjective, and when Maddy talks about how fast the years fly by, it feels kinda meta because we’re literally seeing time jumps within the film. So, the 20 yrs later at the end probably feels real to Owen even tho, in the Pink Opaque “dimension”, maybe not much time has passed at all. And the final scene in the bathroom really hammers home the message of “there is still time.” It’s tragic to lose years of your life bc you’re scared to be yourself, but there is also no deadline to figuring out your identity. I think Owen still has time to become Isabel and I choose to believe that one day Owen will embrace the TV glow 📺🩷

I just joined this tier the other day and it's worth it to watch this with you both. This movie. It hits me on a level even I don't understand.

Maddy's actor is non-binary, and non-binary people are considered part of the trans community and make up about 30% of the trans community. The white stripe on the trans flag is for non-binary/genderqueer people, and the trans symbol has a symbol that combines the male and female symbol into one for being a mix on the gender spectrum. The main message of the movie is that if you bury your true self you'll be dying inside along with them. Owen can't breathe right at the end because his true self is dying locked away inside him.
