Oh this one is a right of passage, these ladies are my mothers!

Ahhhh... I have been waiting with bated breath for this all month! I knew that you would love this movie. It is so iconic. I actually saw this as a play before it was even a movie (yes, I am ancient). My 10th grade English teacher took us to a small local theater to see it, and none of us knew what it was about. Cut to a group of sobbing 15 year olds walking back to school. And because I enjoy pain, apparently, I went on to see it multiple times in theaters when it came out not too long after that. Chey might know this because he directed a stage version, but the story by Robert Harling is actually based on his experiences with his sister's death. I'm sure artistic license was taken, but what happened in the movie pretty much happened to his sister. Now I have to put on my thinking cap for more tear jerkers. You have already watched my top two- this and Fried Green Tomatoes. ❤️

I've seen this movie so many times. I bawl like a baby every time. It was great watching it with you all. If you want another tearjerker, can we please watch "Imitation of life" Starring Lana Turner. It's a very good movie. I promise you would love it. 😘

One of my favorite Dolly Parton stories is from this movie. Apparently, at some point during filming, the director got frustrated with her and told her she couldn't act. Her response -- "You're not telling me anything I don't know. You didn't hire me because I could act. You hired me because I'm a personality. You're the director -- you make it LOOK like I'm acting." ICON.

The shot of Shelby leaving and herom watching is so impactful. Empty nest is a real thing. I was so sad when my kids moved out on their own. Sad they were leaving, happy they are starting their own lives and terrified all at the same time.

Jennifer Z

the hair in this movie is ICONIC!! 💅🏼 ✨

Emily Carmen

The 2012 remake was quite good and I strongly recommend it :-)

Violet

I love this movie, until the sad part, then I HATE it, then I love it again. Lol

Robin Beatch

I knew this was coming. Everyone's going to come home to me sobbing into the laundry as I try to fold it 🤧 I haven't seen this since I was a teen and my mom and I sobbed together. Here we go!

Justin

Sally Field should've won her 3rd Oscar for this and I'll die on that hill! 🤧

Katy B

I love this movie, but every time I watch it I long for an alternate ending where Ouiser and Clairee end up together. (And if you love Shirley MacLaine (and crying) you absolutely have to watch Terms of Endearment.)

Midgey_M

I think the holiday aspect is just to show the passage of time. just my thoughts

☆ n e s s y ☆

planning a double feature of this followed by charlie's angels full throttle once i get my 🍃refill - y'all are the best 💖

Stephanie Ella

OMG the cemetery scene was EVERYTHING.. and I’ll die on that hill with you.

Stephanie Ella

This makes me wanna rewatch "Sleeping with the Enemy" and "Pretty Woman".

Petty Pumpkins

it's what we deserve!!!! and Terms of Endearment is def on the list!

Petty Pumpkins

the fact that she didn't even get a nomination is actually maddening

Petty Pumpkins

we were looking at that one the other day! that cast is amazing!!

Petty Pumpkins

SET the standard for southern hair in movies forever!

Petty Pumpkins

the best kind of cry that feels so good 😭 we loved it!

Petty Pumpkins

that image is etched into my memory, sally's face acting was so powerful!

Petty Pumpkins

omg that's so sweet how long this story has been in your life 🥹 we're already itching for a rewatch even though that feels sadistic this soon after the first watch lol 🙈 but it was that good!!!

Petty Pumpkins

they set the standard for southern women everywhere 😭

Petty Pumpkins

she is incredible! definitely our favorite character 🤗

Rebecca Pantene

My sister and I saw this in the theater when it came out (yes, I’m old AF) and we cried our eyes out! Such a beautiful movie!

Robin Beatch

Oh bitch the tears were flowing! Interestingly I thought this time it would hit me super hard as a mom and it definitely got me, but what really gave me the feelings was the dynamic of those amazing women <3 <3

Alex gallo

I vote either FREEDOM WRITERS or MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Gotta love a swanky tearjerker. On the horror front I’m ready for THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 & CHILD OF RAGE (1992). Thank you. Love you. Bye.

Alex gallo

Maybe THE BABYSITTERS CLUB (1995) 👀

Melodie Ladner

My favourite parts are The Haircut and the birthday scene where they never show Julia Roberts's head.

Aaron J

So cool you got to direct the play! I designed the set when I worked in summer theatre.

fkajackiebrown

the love for julia roberts runs real deep with me. two underrated movies of hers that you could check out sometime for the sake of comfort movies. Mystic Pizza - think 80s seaside new england featuring familiar famous faces and pizza. Sleeping with the Enemy - late 80s or early 90s crime thriller. look into them, if youd like. :) oh! and i would love the hell out of an Erin Brockovich reaction or commentary if you guys are up to it someday!

Petty Pumpkins

we have both seen sleeping with the enemy from when we were growing up but have never seen Mystic Pizza. Can't remember if we mentioned it in this reaction but we LOVE Erin B--her time on the channel IS coming

fkajackiebrown

Oooouu good to know. Erin Brockovich is that girl. i stan forever. and oh. Mystic Pizza is perfect for a gloomy day. even on your own time if youre looking for a comfort movie.

Traci McMurray

At age 52 (about to be 53--January baby as well, but at the end of January), I first watched this movie from the POV of Shelby and the cast members her age. And over the years, of course, I now watch it from like Ouiser's age! ROFL!!!!! But the impact of this movie never changes. The strong performances from the cast. Sally Field, OMG!!!!! She is every character she plays, just 100%. She fully commits while remaining authentic. It's such a craft she has honed. Such a gift.

Traci McMurray

And watching y'all's faces!!!!! LOL! and also I cry along with you as well. We really liked to traumatize ourselves at the movie theater back in the day. Imagine going in--knowing nothing about the plot, etc. Real cowboy style of approaching life. LOL! We felt all our feels, but sadly, for things like movies and TV shows and characters and not often enough for ourselves and our own predicaments.

Traci McMurray

Not a dry eye in the theater--I agree!

William Tanner

You two are such dolls. Looking at your sad faces while Sally had her breakdown reminded me of when I watched Fried Green Tomatoes with you and we sobbed together. That's when I decided to subscribe. If you're like me, you enjoy a good catharsis once in a while.

William Tanner

Shirley said he was mean to Julia, too.

William Tanner

Favorite tearjerker? My go-to is LIFE AS A HOUSE (2001).

Petty Pumpkins

it really does feel soooo good to cry lol. we're actually seeing Fried Green Tomatoes in theaters later this week (with some friends who have never seen it!!!) and words truly cannot express how excited we are to enjoy it on the big screen!

jessethecomet

"get it lady dressed in a curtain" OH MY GODDD that sent me over the edge lmaoo

James Grant

y'all should do August osage county
