It makes me really sad and upset that Good Boy is winning, because it’s arguably the most inhumane and unethical use of an animal in film/tv in decades…”The filmmakers claim that Indy (the lead) had minimal ‘formal acting training,’ and much of his behavior on-camera is natural, not ‘trained performance.’” That is the absolute worst case scenario. The reason why animal actors are professionally trained is that it protects them from the very real possibility of harm. There is a sense of detachment because they’re just responding to commands same as “sit” and “roll over.” So no, trained responses aren’t always convincing, but the “natural” alternative means the writer/director was putting their companion into ACTUAL states of terror and grief. Made even worse by the fact that the dog was responding to what their actual companion’s suffering or intimidation, not some random actor they only know from a set. Ethical productions have animal welfare supervisors who are specifically certified to monitor if/when the animal enters an actual harm/stress state and effectively bring them out of it. 0% chance that someone effectively gets how to do that without an official training program, or that the damage control actually helps beyond the exact present of them getting a pet and a treat. I know you love animals and get upset when they’re harmed in film/TV fiction, so I really really hope you do not react to this. It’s 90 minutes of footage of an animal’s “natural” stress and grief reactions.

Soooo happy the Knives Out movie is winning I was hoping to get a reaction to that when it comes out!! Those movies are always so fun lol & I have to say, while the movie Good Boy seems like an interesting premise, it really is hard to watch - I would MUCH rather something fun/mystery solving like Wake up Dead Man!
