We’re taking it all the way back to 2003 with a first-time watch of BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE 😭🏡 a movie so wildly of its time, with dated comedy and stereotypes galore, BUT Queen Latifah is an actual force of nature and we were living for every second of her performance 👑💅🏾 🔥 There's heat, hi-jinks and a whole-lotta heart coming from Charlene as she brings down the house, and the whole damn neighborhood! (Little old white ladies might want to sit this one out) Oh and Steve Martin is there too... 🤣

I was literally just rewatching clips of this movie, over pure nostalgia, what are the chances!

Crystal

The way me and my siblings sing “Mama, is massa going to sell us tomorrow yes, yes” to each other all the time LMFAOOO (just want to note my family and myself are black before yall come for me lol)

The Movie Buff

The fight scene I used to replay it over and over lol Missi Pyle can’t catch a break this and then Ma she got ran over 😂 Betty White was hilarious as always she had a great sense of humor and queen latifah is the executive producer of this movie and this was around the time she did Chicago

I would’ve loved to have been in a movie theater in ‘03 watching the “cojones grande” scene I know they LOST IT 😂😂😂😂

Lori Williams

Missi Pyle what a gem... Pumpkins is there a reason why I am having problems viweing your wonderful reactions vua my tablet? I have no problem from my phone or laptop after logging into the Patreon. Who could I call to perhaps troubleshoot this problem?

Definitely a product of its time. 😂 I remember laughing so much when I first saw it. This viewing I still laughed, but cringed a bit too. Love the cast. ❤️ I've been on the "Jean Smart is a goddess" train since her days on Designing Women, which is one of my all time favorite comedies.

I too watched this at the movie theater, with my ex, and didn’t remember anything but the dancing in the club near the end however I thought Eugene Levy danced in this but didn’t see that here. 🤔 I will say that even all the way back in 2003 the blatant racism in this was problematic and I remember my ex kinda hating this movie for that reason. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Violet

The crush Eugene Levy has on her, is SO relatable!

Mimi M

I don't remember this movie being this racist OMG

First, yes, there are videos made, discussing the controversy of this movie, etc. Even Queen Latifa had things to say about it years later. That is the first thing I wanted to validate. The second thing--in 2003, I saw this in the theater with my mom. I turned 30 that year. (I had to count that four times, because that just doesn't seem right. LOL!). I even felt a kind of way about it at the time, but just low-key. Because the humor is there and cannot be denied. And the casting is amazing. Little did I know, in 2004 my dad would die and just six months later, in 2005, my mom would also die and Mom had this movie in her DVD collection. And I'd just watch it and cry and miss her so much! You both brought back so many memories tonight. Thank you. Bless you both. And as your elder, anyone in the North Texas area--check the forecast for this weekend. We have some single digit cold in the forecast and that is NOT normal for us here and usually causes a lot of problems. Stay safe everyone.

I forgot--if you want more Steve Martin, maybe Father of the Bride. :-)

Violet

Father of the Bride HAS to be the next Steve Martin movie!! It's magical!

Sisi M

I heard a Chicago re watch is a possibility!? Please and thank you 😊

So, i have a few thoughts regarding the racist jokes - 1. 2003 was definitely a time and a place and terms like "micro-agression" didn't exist, ie. The moments of low frequency bigotry - like pretending to speak Chinese and then hanging up on 911 dispatch - pretty much flew under the radar of 99% of the general populace. 2. Speaking as a member of a mixed race family and as a notably white priveledged "white passing" mixed race person - when this movie came out i was cringing through the whole thing... But, as an absolute superfan of Queen Latifah, Eugene Levy and Steve Martin, I made a conscious choice to trust that the intention in making this movie was to open closed minds with humor. Sadly, bigots who are ready to be enlightened, often need permission to be wrong so they can embrace expansion and release their racist preconceived notions. They will go scurrying back to their shitty little bigot caves and continue living in fear if they get startled by confrontational truth. In 2003 I viewed this movie as a gentle coaxing attempt to help them up out of the muck. 3. So, my point is (i think? Lol) that the racist jokes were almost necessary for the plot to work and to push the anti-racist narrative. (This seems counterintuitive, but as i stated earlier, i was cringing all through it in 2003 as well as today, and i might be utterly mistaken, but i hope this is at least partially true) I am glad we are progressive enough as a society that this movie is now so very "dated".

If you are into period pieces at all, Jean Smart was In a tv miniseries adaptation of Scarlett. It's a sequel to Gone With The Wind. It's fantastic. Fantastic cast and Jean looks great in it and her character is a spitfire.

had to join when i saw you guys had done this but may i also suggest one of Queen's best performances in Bessie (2015) if you haven't seen it already. maybe you could do it for BHM since it is based on real events? (just a suggestion)
