We’re continuing our never-ending quest to watch amazing movies with a first-time watch of DO THE RIGHT THING, a film that many (ourselves now included) consider one of the greatest ever made. Spike Lee’s masterpiece transcends time in a way that feels both extraordinary and deeply unsettling as its relevance hits just as hard today. Moved, shaken, and stirred can’t even begin to describe how we felt after this experience, but it’s the closest we’ve got. 🔥🍕❤️‍🩹

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVERYONE!! And what a great, powerful, original, visionary film to kick off the month! Thank you so much for doing this Spike Lee classic! Rosie Perez dancing her ass off in the beginning always makes me want to dance btw 🤗. Been a while since I’d last seen it, and I loved watching your reaction. I might be a white lesbian half Italkim Jewish girl from the suburbs (that, as unlikely as it sounds, was also raised in The Jesus Love Temple black Pentecostal church.) but I love nearly all of Spike’s films, and I’ve seen them all. Highly recommend checking out more. Maybe 1 out of my 3 personal favorites- 1.Son Of Sam, 2. Girl Six, and my all time favorite 3. Crooklyn, which is such a beautiful film ❤️ Remember to always fight the power, every chance you get. Racism, bigotry and hatred is fucking vile, unbelievably stupid, and truly, corrosively evil. So, unlike many of the characters in this film, DO THE RIGHT THING. ❤️ oh yeah, f you Trump, go to hell where you belong. Sorry. I had to. In honor of this month especially. And I know I just did the right thing writing that🤷‍♀️😂

This was a first time watch for me, and so fucking poignant and relevant. This shit is happening everywhere. Loved this film, thank you for posting!! BLACK LIVES MATTER

I hate this movie because too many people miss the real point of it. I think you guys missed the point when you were clapping and snapping. The black people weren't right in this movie. NOBODY did the right thing. There was nothing to applaud. Radio Raheem's death wasn't Sal's fault. The violence was so unnecessary.

Thank you for viewing this. Please watch Malcolm X to be floored by the cinematic artistry and deep message. Being open to conversation is a step in the right direction, Doing the Right thing can sometimes be hard but necessary, however one must always make an attempt at least. Back on a lighter note, Denzel is so fine in Malcolm X 😩❤️. Keep slaying the children with truth, fellow pumpkins!

Wow. Pleasantly surprised to see this show up on the channel 💜 formative movie for this born and raised Brooklyn girl.

💀 your shame at realizing 40 mins in that it’s John Turturro.

First time watch for me. Amazing film, but it's honestly sad how far we haven't come as a society. It feels like so much of the progress that had been made (and even that was not enough) has deteriorated so quickly. On a happier note, I always love seeing Ruby Dee (Mother Sister) and Ossie Davis (Da Mayor) in projects together. Gotta admire any couple who stayed happily married for 57 years... not to mention the talent that they both had. And on a slightly shallow note, Ruby Dee was soooo beautiful. Her face was like art.

Not Spike Lee, but Boyz N the Hood is amazing and came out shortly after this.

Spike Lee's masterpiece!! Malcolm X is great. I have a soft spot for Summer of Sam (but it's not a great movie.) Black Klansman is rough.

Thanks so much for sharing your opinion! Respectfully, we don’t necessarily agree because the point of the film is not whether or not what was done to Sal was right or wrong. It’s left ambiguous for opinions like yours and reactions like ours to exist. The movie is a metaphor and the message spans further than just 1989 and the film itself. The question isn’t whether or not Mookie did the right thing, it’s what can actually be classified as “right” in such a broken world? Radio Raheem’s speech on Love and hate shows that those are the only two options left (in this story). Ultimately, Mookie chooses hate after Raheem is killed, which is right to him in that moment. It’s taking a stance, it’s not backing down, it’s reflecting consequence. Was it the best decision? Probably not. Was it right? Who is to say? We the audience saw just how racist Sal and his boys actually were. The community came together to take down his restaurant because it was a symbol of bigotry and racism in that moment. Will they regret it in the morning? Probably. Maybe not. Who is to say? All we know is Sal and his boys hated black people. They said it in every way they could, however had no problem profiting off of the community. You have to understand that we are watching this film in a time where social injustice is running this country into the ground. When do we fight back? What is the right thing to do? We are not racist sympathizers so we have no empathy for Sal. It’s hard to look at him any other way. Does that make us wrong? He’s going to get his pizza place back with the insurance money, but Radio Raheem is lost forever. The final domino that caused him to die, however, was Sal. We tried to do research about what Spike Lee himself has said and he has never stated who was right and wrong, because both can be true at the same time. It’s up to our interpretation.

Malcolm X is a great Spike Lee movie!!

I love this movie and I really love the quotes. Malcolm X isn’t taught as much and as revered as Martin Luther King because he didn’t condemn violence and because he was Muslim. Martin’s persistence methodology will disrupt systems and produce slower change, Malcolm’s lack of condemning violence would ultimately dismantle systems of power and you can’t have the masses thinking that is an option. So they both can exist but in my opinion Martin is first resort and Malcolm becomes last. Truthfully I feel like violence is the answer sometimes, it’s just never the first. Slaves were never going to be able to Kumbaya outta slavery, that’s why there were violent uprisings. Also I think it’s ok to acknowledge that no matter how justified violence can be, we can still acknowledge that it is damaging and there will be people who end up as the collateral damage. Not a Spike Lee Movie but would love for you to watch 12 Years A Slave if you haven’t. It’s based on a real man’s writings of his life and what happened to him, and Steve McQueen is a brilliant director.

At the beginning is the Black National Anthem!!
