These films came out while I was in college. The older I’ve gotten, the more I realize I want to be like Samwise. I showed these movies to my nephews in the past year, because I want them to see and understand that men can be emotional and have deep friendships and honor. And to do the right thing, even if you’re terrified. Loved getting to experience this with you both! Can’t wait for the Two Towers :)

This was so fun to rewatch with you! Wes was locked in and stressed! I saw this in the theater and knew nothing about it, but I walked out asking “Who was that elf?!” Orlando was so dreamy I couldn’t take my eyes off him. They filmed all 3 back to back in a little over a year in New Zealand. Nobody got paid that much, but they were all excited to do it. You can go on tours and visit the sets like the hobbit homes.

This was my franchise was my entire identity for like six years straight when I was younger. I tried to wear my hair in elvish braids, learnt all the elvish lines, made lembas bread and went to midnight screenings with friends. I'm so excited to watch this with you guys again! They're such great movies! I do have to say, that the first time I show these movies to people, I typically show them the theatrical release, as I feel the extended versions are really, really long if you've never seen the movies before and aren't even sure you'll like them. The first time my partner saw the movies, it was her friend making her binge all the extended versions and it was so exhausting that my partner just fell asleep, and just couldn't really care less about the movies. Then we watched the theatrical versions together, and now we watch the extended every Christmas. This to say, I do feel that although the extended versions are my preferred versions, the pacing isn't as tight as in the theatrical and - especially the first movie - can drag a teensy bit if you're not already invested. That all being said, I am really glad you guys are reacting to the extended anyways, especially since it's clear you're enjoying it. They do develop characters a but more, and you get cool lore you wouldn't get in theatrical. The next two movies absolutely fly by, regardless if you watch extended or not. Can't wait for the next one!

One of the best things about the Lord of the Rings movies is they avoid the dumb machismo of a lot of big action movies. The men in it are kind, they are open with their feelings and express love for one another and others.

I try to watch this trilogy at least once a year. If I'm remembering correctly, New Line Cinema had to be convinced to back the films. Peter Jackson shot fake footage of Liv Tyler being much more heavily involved in the action to sell the main plot as a love story between Arwen and Aragorn. Where was OSHA when the Mines of Moria were being built?! There's no amount of money that would ever tempt me to traverse those insane staircases. Sean Astin cut his foot on a shard of broken glass during the scene toward the end when Sam is chasing after Frodo. The wound was so bad, he had to be air lifted from the location to have it treated.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again throughout the course of these movies Sam and Frodo seem a little gay for each other. I know they’re just really close friends but I’ve always gotten slight homoerotic vibes from the two of them 😅 Also Elijah Wood…I grew up watching him, even though he’s about 10 years older than me but I always thought he was so handsome and thought he had the most amazing blue eyes lol. I remember seeing him in The Good Son when I was a little kid and I thought he was cute, then in The Faculty when I got older and then LoTR. In LoTR I was like “Oh he still looks cute here” and then they showed his size next to the average human and elves and I was like uhhhh this feels weird 😂
