For sure in order to make it a viable movie, they had to do at least the bare minimum of exposition to make sure that people who didn't see the show could still watch the movie. The bit about Inara that I didn't mention in previous posts is that they planned a backstory where she had a terminal illness. That was part of her decision to join Serenity after she left the companion house so that she could live the rest of her life on her own terms. It is also why she wouldn't let herself get closer to Mal. The comics also give more information on the events that got her kicked out of the companion house. During the war, she had a client who was a secret agent for the Independents, and he told her about an offensive against an Alliance target. She alerted the Alliance because she thought it would prevent a lot of people being killed and gave them the location of a Browncoat base. The Alliance destroyed it. The companion house found out that she broke the code of confidentiality with clients by telling the Alliance the info, and they expelled her (she was still allowed to be a companion though).

That would have been an interesting twist and would have made alot of sense if they mentioned it in the movie.
