Great reaction, guys. This is based off of a series of books by novelist Patrick O’Brien on the naval conflict during the Napoleonic Wars. My Dad loved those books. I tried to read them several times but was lost by the maritime lingo. I know a little bit from reading the Horatio Hornblower series, but it’s a foreign language for me! Midshipmen are officers in training. They start as young as 10 years old, and are from gentry or aristocratic families who are impoverished or have too many sons and not enough inheritance for all of them. Capturing an enemy ship means they can sell it and all of its contents and divide the profits among the officers and crew. The boys living below decks are often homeless or illegitimate children who would otherwise starve on the streets so by joining a crew, they learn to become sailors and have 3 square meals a day (notice the square wooden plates they eat from?) That’s where the saying comes from. Being a “son of a gun” comes from being an illegitimate child born from a sailor and prostitute. As you noticed, they are very superstitious. It’s considered bad luck to kill an albatross and we see why when the doctor is accidentally shot. There’s a famous poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge about being cursed for killing an albatross, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Crossing Cape Horn is very dangerous, even with today’s ships. It’s where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans meet, and it’s notorious for terrible storms. The building of the Panama Canal offered ships an alternative route. The area where there was no wind or rain is called The Doldrums- another treacherous part of the sea.

On a personal note, I’ve always been fascinated by the “Age of Sail” and consider wooden ships very beautiful, especially with the sails fluttering in the breeze. I did some genealogy on my paternal side and one of my 12th great grandfathers was an Elizabethan sea dog. He was a captain in the fleet led by Sir Francis Drake, where he took part in fighting the Spanish armada. He got malaria, probably from exploring the Americas with Drake, and died a few years later, still fairly young. Interesting times!

Wow. 10 years old is so young. It makes sense if they're often homeless. Hopefully they had that superstition for any bird so they don't accidentally shoot anyone 😂 Ahh ok. I didn't know that. Was that one of the major reasons behind building the canal ?

Your relative knew Sir Francis Drake. How many people can say that ! That's really amazing. Oohhh ...What if you got that fascination because he passed it down to you !!
