Serious? Ellen cares about nobody but Ellen. Arguably you could say she cares about Saul but even there it is usually a matter of improving her own status either directly or through him. That is why she constantly is manipulating him and trying to set Saul against Adama. To advance Saul's status, and indirectly her own, she needs Adama out of the way.

I think the recognition between Ellen Tigh and Zarek at the end is supposed to suggest that she gave him Valance's location and he set up the hit (or there is also the possibility that she provided Valance with the means of killing himself). The luxurious day for the Tighs on the Rising Star could be a reward from Zarek for whatever Ellen did. Her killing Valance herself is probably more than she would do for that reward plus her desire to see Saul advance in order to improve her own status. You didn't miss anything though. The circumstances surrounding Valance's death are meant to remain ambiguous.
