This movie is great. I love the soundtrack, the intro song is an actual recording of prisoners singing and chopping wood. Even if you're not a country or "old-timey" fan, I highly recommend the whole soundtrack. It's a really fun collection and time capsule of music from around the time period. It's got fun callbacks if you're familiar with the Odyssey, but you hardly need to know it to enjoy it. FWIW, you're not far off with the dragon, the KKK's leader went by Grand Wizard. It's thrown in a bit, but the time period is mostly right. The Klan had a big revival in the 1920s in the US, there were a couple different Governors (Alabama and Georgia) that were participants. The Great Depression kind of took the wind out of its sails, most everyone was struggling, even the racists.

When this came our I'd seen just about every Coen Bros. movie and the last thing I was expecting from them was a musical comedy. Somebody must have pointed out that John Goodman's character represented the cyclops. I love how he casually tosses away his chicken bone at the picnic. A pretty spot on reference to the source material. Great choice guys.
