Oh somehow I missed the announcement for this. This is a classic 90's movie, at the tail end of the cold war. This is what Hollywood should go back to rather than preaching what we should believe and aspire. The whole movie through no matter which side you are on it makes you think ... am I on the right side here? DefCon is short for Defense Condition (proposed by Norad in 1966). Level 5 (also referred to as Fade Out) is peace with normal readiness, Level 1 (also referred to as Cocked Pistol) is war has started or is about to start. As such level 4 (also referred to as Double Take) is the first state of heightened readiness. Level 3 (Round House) means the next level of readiness, for instance Air Force is ready to take of in 15 minutes. Level 2 (Fast Pace) is the final level of heightened readiness, the last one before (nuclear) war. At this point armed forces are ready to deploy in less than 6 hours. How did they figure out it is an Akula ... Well passive sonar. Passive sonar detects the target's radiated noise characteristics. The radiated spectrum comprises a continuous spectrum of noise with peaks at certain frequencies which can be used for classification. In simple terms, it's like identifying a car by the sound of the engine. It is loosely based according to some on events on a Russian sub during the Cuban missile crisis but really that's mostly speculation I think. Now if you want a similar movies for subs, then there is of the top of my head ... Das Boot (more of a cult movie, pretty raw stuff) ... Oh and of course Hunt for Red October. With Sean Connery...

Oh that's amazing about passive sonar. I had no idea that's how it worked. Thanks for the info on DefCon.
