The closing scene of this episode is literally the first thing kate segal and zach gilford shot in this show. I don’t know if they did rehearsals before shooting, but she did say that it was difficult to shoot because it was their first time working together and her first time in the role. I think Zach Gilford’s performance is quite remarkable in that context. Also, from the few interviews I’ve seen, the rest of the cast seem to have been in awe of Hamish Linklater’s performance. Personally, i think it’s what makes the show compelling. Very few actors can play charismatic roles and the ones that do often have trouble portraying vulnerability on camera, Hamish can switch between the two from moment to moment. His sermons alone are a sight to behold.

My spoiler free take on why Bev is helping the Monsignor (instead of raising the alarm) is that 1. Bev is clearly a very religious person, so at a basic level she does believe that what is happening is miraculous. 2. Unlike the monsignor, her faith is not driven by love for the people in the community. It’s driven by a deep-seated need to feel superior to them and to force them to acknowledge that superiority. By helping the monsignor she achieves that goal. Because of his condition, his interaction with the public has to be limited, which means that she becomes the de facto gatekeeper to God’s “miracles” and people will have to literally beg her to get relief from their ailments. They will have to acknowledge that her being in that position is a reflection of God’s favor and, therefore, of her superiority. There’s quite a bit more i could say that technically wouldn’t be a spoiler but i don’t want to give away where the show is going with this character.
