Sister Cities were a program that was promoted by the newly formed UN and its founder countries in an effort to promote trade and cultural exchange after ww2 The idea was to have two cities or towns of roughly the same size (at least similar at the time), the sister cities would ideally promote diplomatic visits like the one we see go horribly wrong here. Unfortunately as you can see the program has never been very successful and is seen by most people as a cheap form of symbolic but meaningless handshaking and photo ops with little actually gained either culturally or economically. There are wonderful exceptions, but many times it’s been lots of patting people on the backs and saying “wow isn’t it wonderful how we are friends with other cultures” before both communities going back to the status quo

The concept makes sense, it just seems like a "who's got the better city " match in this episode 🤣

My city in the US has 9 sister cities. One each in France, China, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, Israel, Germany, Tanzania, and Mexico. There are student exchange programs between the cities, which is probably my favorite part of the program. We have 5 places around town that have posts with signs shaped like arrows pointing in the direction of each sister city with its name, city emblem, distance from our city in both kilometers and miles, and the year we became sister cities. As part of the overall Global Alliance program, we have visitor exchanges with lots of cities, not just our sister cities. For example, we recently had representatives from The Gambia, African Union, Liberia, and Ethiopia come for a leadership program themed "Transitional Justice in Africa and the United States." The aim was to learn about how to better heal historical wounds caused to the Black and Native American communities in our city based on models used in Africa. We also had a group from Azerbaijan come to learn from a local energy company about developing and sustaining corporate social responsibility. Unfortunately, I don't know of anything happening that's as funny as in this episode, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone had been gifted a gold gun. Actually, where I'm from, we're probably the ones gifting the guns. 🤣

🤣🤣 The gifts idea is so funny. Interesting that this concept exists of having sister towns, the student exchange program is a good concept, we have that at some of the universities in the major towns within the UK.
