You had always had a problem saying ‘no’ to things. Events you didn’t want to go to. People asking for help that you didn’t have time to give. Someone would ask, and your people pleaser brain just had to say yes. It wasn’t your fault. But then you met someone who saw it.

It wasn’t much at first. Them asking you to get them a drink whilst out at the bar. Them asking you to fetch something for them when you were at each other’s houses. Simple stuff. So easy to do. And it made them happy. They thanked you for it. And then, one day, it changed.

They asked you to look into their eyes. You had been dating for a while, but this eye contact felt different. More charged. “Just stare, and forget about thinking for a while, honey.” They had said. You wanted to please, so of course you did. You obeyed. You followed along.

“I love finding a people pleaser. You’re so easy to mould. To shape. Because of course you’ll say yes. Even when it’s an imposition to you. Look into my eyes. Let me take control. Wear this. Do that. You keep on saying yes. It’s the most natural thing into the world for you.”

They had kept going, but your brain was finding it hard to follow their words. Hard to concentrate on anything but how nice it felt to listen. A small part of you knew they were taking advantage of you. But you… Didn’t mind that. You wanted it. You relished it.
