“…The Amazons, known in certain archaic sources by the ancient appellation Androleteirai, are said to have emerged from the far eastern reaches beyond the Great Grass Sea some ten millennia ago. The preservation of so ancient a name within the surviving records of the Middle Plain would suggest that these peoples were known, at least in fragmentary form, to our ancestors long before the founding of modern Theron.

It is further theorised that the Amazons descend from the nomadic tribes of those eastern steppes, among whom even women and children are instructed from an early age in horsemanship and archery. Such origins may account for the marked divergence of Amazon social customs and military organisation from the patriarchal structures that have historically predominated throughout the civilised realms of the Middle Plain.”

— Historia Amazonae, by Magister Gaius Aldric of Ravenscroft, Theronian historian of Ravenscroft University

“…The Theronians themselves are not believed to be indigenous to the Middle Plain. Most accepted accounts trace their origins to the northern frontier tribes once employed by the Eternal Valerian Empire as auxiliary mercenaries and border soldiery. It was from among these martial peoples that Therius Valerian Aethelric — later styled King Therius the Liberator — arose to prominence during the great upheaval now remembered as the Rebellion of Therius.

Though his revolt ultimately shattered Valerian authority across much of the Middle Plain, it would be erroneous to regard Therius as wholly hostile to Valerian civilisation. On the contrary, surviving court records and early Theronian inscriptions suggest that he greatly admired the imperial culture of his former masters, adopting many of their customs, administrative institutions, legal traditions, and even elements of their language and naming conventions.

Thus, the Kingdom of Theron may best be understood not as the destruction of the Valerian world, but rather as one of its surviving heirs — transformed through conquest, militarisation, and the ascendancy of a new warrior aristocracy.”

— States of the Middle Plain, by Aristarchos of Thornvale, scholar of the Free City of Aetherport

“…The Amazons — creatures said to be born of she-wolves and other savage female beasts — are a scourge upon this world. They are corrupters of our daughters and womenfolk, slayers of our sons and husbands alike. They are degenerates who revel in both lust and bloodshed.

In their profane rites, they indulge in unspeakable orgies by the most desecrated means imaginable, mocking both divine law and the natural order ordained for mankind.

They are not merely enemies of Theron, but enemies of civilisation itself.

They must be utterly destroyed.”

— Severian Tharos, High Confessor of Theropolis
