I think there are a lot of people who havent really put themselves in other people's shoes before, and/or havent had much exposure to the world in general. But I think AOT and Vinland kinda forces you to go through all the stages of emotion when you start to think about the world outside of yourself. Likewise, Ive had people tell me they dont like watching stuff like this cause it gets too real. So Imo there are tons of people who do their best to distance themselves from things like that they become unknowingly ignorant to all of it. Until an anime comes along and rocks their world ig lol
