Hiromu Arakawa does an amazing job with her character writing. Even with her male characters, she does a fantastic job portraying their reluctance to express emotions. Ed's immediate reaction is to downplay his trauma and insist that it's not so bad. It reminds me of the episode where Mr. Hughes and Winry discuss how men tend to express their feelings through actions rather than words. But even in that episode, Arakawa shows us that simply communicating with someone can be just as valuable as letting your actions speak. Ed and Al just needed permission from their teacher to open up. They don't want to burden others. But everyone needs support from someone.
