Daryl already revealed who he was before the apocalypse to Beth in Season 4. He was just a drifter with Merle.

The whole, following Negan would make Rick the villain never made sense to me. Negan killed for pleasure, Rick only killed up to season 8 in defence. If we saw Rick line up Negans men and laugh while killing them we wouldn't support him or root for him. It's just pure evil regardless of the characters backstory.

Negan never killed for “pleasure”. Did he take pleasure in it when he had to? Yes. But he didn’t just kill people because he wanted to entertain himself. There was always a reason behind every one of his kills. “People are resources”. And yes Negan was a villain, but the whole “Negan killed for pleasure” isn’t true at all.
