To answer you regarding Marco : yes you were overthinking he wasn't burnt I can say without spoiling anything, he was "split in half" but the animators have to censor a lot of stuff in this show in order to make it publicly available, which is why it looks like that.

Since ep 1 Even when mikasa was telling Erin’s parents about his goals to join she said “eren wants to join the scouts” when they returned the first time from beyond the walls the crowds reffered to them as scouts. I know I can’t be trippen cause I’ve watched this over and over and over breakdowns and all. If they were referred to it was always as scouts. When AoT was first coming out all we had were fansubs. 調査兵団 was translated as scouting regiment/survey legion/recon corps etc. The official manga translation went with survey corps. All translations are valid (except maybe legion, because they're not a legion). You can pick any combination of survey/scout/recon and corps/regiment and it's close enough to the meaning in Japanese.

Japanese is mostly gender neutral, and to my ears Hanji isn't addressed any differently from anyone else, so from my PoV any weirdness is coming from the translation. I think 'Sir' is fine to use with women too though, don't really care either way

that's actually not true, she is not non-binary. Yes in the manga its ambiguous wether she is male or female by the way she acts, but she is female and drawn as such.

Hange isn't non binary. Hange's gender is unknown as Japanese doesn't really use pronouns that often, most often their name is said instead of a pronoun. Isayama said that he purposely made their gender unclear (which is really easy to do, because you can just avoid pronouns) because he thought it's funny.

its just weird censorship of marco being bitten in half. mangas have to be censored sometimes for their anime adaptation to air on tv. also old crunchyroll translations are notoriously bad, fansubs do a much better job. i cant recommend a streaming site though since ive just downloaded everything for so long off nyaa.si cool to see a fellow op2 appreciator! op1 is such a classic but i prefer the 2nd one as well. might be better not to watch the future openings until after u finish the arc, but not a big deal. definitely get a comment moderator to clean up spoilers before reading all the comments though, the payoff will be super worth it if you can avoid spoilers for this show!!! it only gets progressively better from here, praying for 2 batches a week!

In episode 1 they took both zhiganshina (or however you spell it) which is one of Wall Maria's nipples AND all of wall Maria. Colossal Titan broke the first gate, Armored Titan broke Wall Maria's gate. In this battle, they lost and reclaimed Trost, which is one of Wall Rose's nipple cities. Wall Sina is the innermost "elite" city.

Well, I highly disagree. And also, I find the Japanese titan sounds to be ridiculous and immersion breaking. But my point wasn't really about that, it was about the literal difference in wording. I've watched a lot of people react to AoT and when they watch in sub they, without fail, miss the same specific details because of cultural nuances. The dubs of AoT are specifically curated for their audiences to understand the general story and interactions between characters better.

Okay. Most of us can't speak any of it. So they all sound the same with their anime voice lines. No one talks like this in Japan and you should know that the translation on subtitles is often wrong and doesn't fit with what their actually saying.

Im pretty sure the way Marcos body was drawn dark is just because they said its been 2 days since, and blood rots and decays. The other thing is that sometimes in anime they dont want to be too graphic so they shade the gruesome parts heavily, that might also be a part of it.

the guy calls hange “buntaichou”, which is just a title. he’s not actually calling her “sir”, they just translated it wrong. taichou means captain/leader and buntai means squad, so it translates to “squad leader” also for future reference, in japanese, you would use a person’s last name when referring to them unless you’re close with them. it’s a sign of closeness/friendship. that’s why the girl said “can I call you eren?” instead of calling him jaeger, because using eren is more personal. that’s also why some people call erwin “commander smith” and others say “commander erwin”

You mean you like dub better? Lol And that’s fair, everyone has their own preference. Me personally, the dub sounds too childish. Makes it hard for me to stay immersed in the world when the English voice actors sound the way the do - it’s hard to describe, just doesn’t hit the same (especially in an anime that takes itself very seriously and is dark af, I can look past this when it comes to more comedy focused anime, which often hit better in English for me) . The Japanese voice actors just go so hard more consistently. It’s not as common for English dubs to have voice actors of the same caliber as Japanese voice actors, in anime specifically. I think it comes down to time and commitment, the Japanese VAs are there from the start and create these characters, they are acting in the truest sense. English dubs are simply actors attempting to recreate what the Japanese version laid the foundation for, and often VERY soon after the episode aired leaving little time to invest into the characters. If you can look past all that and still enjoy the content, that’s great! I’m sure it is a lot easier to watch in your native language. Some of us just can’t look past certain qualities of a dub. (Don’t get me wrong, occasionally English dubs are great, and sometimes even, better than the Japanese version) Ultimately, do what you want - the difference here is, this is Patreon and people pay to watch and expect certain content. If people don’t watch, he makes less money - my man is running a business at the end of the day. That’s how I look at it anyway, and sorry for the long comment 😂😅

Hange is actually potentially non binary! They are referred to in the Manga using they/them pronouns. So while the anime decided to cast female VAs and use she/her pronouns, this is not the case for the Manga and their gender isnt ever discussed or addressed

You may already have had this answered elsewhere, but Hange's sex is left unwritten by the author. Many translations refer to them as Sir but even avoid using he/she at all. When asked, Isayama basically said "Decide whatever you like".

Until the industry improves I don't think that fight is going anywhere, lol. It's existed since they first started dubbing anime in English - and I don't have that much faith it's going to change without some pretty big process changes and lots more money. I been on that battlefield for like, almost 30 years, haha. I'd love for better quality in my own language - but it hasn't happened in decades, not really, so... I just don't think it's going to. Maybe I'm black pilled on this one.

like, I get the reason people would prefer that - but the acting is just so bad for most characters. So much that their personalities seem totally different, even with the same lines. The tension is cut in half when there's a tone mismatch. I don't think I can possibly go back to watching anime in the english dub anymore. I've tried a bunch of times and I just stroke out from cringe. Honestly, even funny anime in English, tend to miss the mark, timing, and tone of the humor. It's a very long-standing problem and ...I dunno, I don't expect that to change. It's not really treated the same in America, as in Japan. I'd love to be able to watch these in my native language and actually feel like it's being taken seriously but I just don't get that from any English dub... it was all I ever wanted until I got it. I have a LOT of respect for Japanese voice actors, they will practically lose their voice to get a line with the correct intensity - guttural screams and such. Especially if you're listening at a high volume - there's just no comparison in how raw and intense it can be.

By the way, in the USA, Canada, and lots of other countries like the UK, (and honestly many, many other countries that aren't western industrial nations) they CONSTANTLY construe clear self defense cases as things like Murder - and they do it on purpose, while pretending they're doing something compassionate. The details literally don't matter to them - they know you fought back against assault/injustice, and if they could get away with it, they would have you hung "in the public square". They pretend all violence is equal, and it's all murder and evil - even though they're usually the evil ones. That's how evil operates - and it happens all the time, many many times every year. It's not a "mistake" usually either - it's intentional. I would bet my life on that statement. They're the reason I was threatened with legal action and other serious consequences when I would defend myself against bullies - even though I made sure that I didn't go "too far". So much as hit back - and you're guilty. In a lot of these moron's eyes. I - clearly - don't see it that way, and I never will. Don't FA - you don't have to FO. You can live a long happy peaceful life - and that's what a lot of these dopes have a problem with, for some reason. It's called "using your kindness/compassion/good nature against you." It's done non-stop, by people who should be in prison instead of positions of power. No need to pick a side, either, politically. A LOT of them do this. I can offer lots of examples, but I don't recommend you address any of them on your channels, or you'll see some fallout for sure, by hyper-political people, or evil people who know exactly what they're doing. Either way - it's an L/L situation unless a vast majority of your fanbase happen to take your side on it... which is rarer than you might think.

Hange is clearly a woman. I hate that this topic comes up every single time there's a woman without huge tits in an anime. It's very tedious and ...kind of weird. Everyone wants to pretend she has a dick and balls for some reason - it's plainly obvious she's got a feminine design. If the author of the manga refused to address it, it's because he thought it was some stupid BS and didn't care to state the obvious. It's that, or those same people go around calling everyone a pdf file for the exact same reason. It's kind of twisted if you ask me. Tons of my family would want your head for these - I've been around when my aunt who has 15+ years on me, has been confused as being a child at a distance. She's clearly gotten tired of it. Can't say I blame her, considering if I'm with her or a couple other family members, I'm the one being called a pdf file, even though they're older than I am... by a lot, too. ...and as far back as I can remember, it's been that way. I wasn't even an adult myself when it first happened, and I'm not that tall or anything. I didn't even know what they were saying to me, because it was in the early 2000's.

It's really not even a mistranslation - in the military, you will often hear a female commander / captain / whatever referred to as "Sir" - it's just the protocol - because in general, in the military, if someone is competent and ranks above you, you listen to them if you value your life and future in the military. They don't really give a shit about all that SJW shit if they actually want things to get done. That's about it. "Sir" can be used in response to a variety of different positions (and genders) - it's a sign of respect, but in this there's not even an exact translation that has an English equivalent because the systems of said countries aren't the same to begin with - a little, but it's not a 1:1 ratio - which is kinda normal in Japanese to English. It means nothing regarding her gender. It's a formal show of respect for rank.

Here's a fun note on the "tribe that ate humans" comment Hange makes. There are human tribes, for sure, throughout history and pre-history that have done so, all over the world... but there are also tales of those that did the same, but were NOT human, and are considered "myth" - but they take place over in Eurasia, Africa, as well as in the Americas. There are Native American tribes with tales of red-headed giants who lived in caves and devoured the tribes. There are VERY similar stories in Africa and the Middle East - places like Ancient Sumer (Modern Day Iraq and surrounding areas) - and there are tales like "Jack and the Beanstalk" from Central/Western Europe (at least I think that's where that one originates, I could be wrong) - but those tales exist in almost every culture, and it's not just by chance. Did you know, in Ecuador, there's supposedly a cast of a 22 foot tall "human (like)" skeleton in a museum right now? I can't pretend to know if it was just sculpted or something, but it's hardly the only tale of such a thing. They just have theirs on display right now. Most of the others have been removed due to internal/external pressure because it's hard to believe anything like a human could be that size. Ancient history and mythology is wild - and I don't think it's all made up, personally. Some of it surely is, but I can't imagine it all is. Same with stuff like ancient/biblical era global/mass flooding. For those same stories to occur nearly simultaneously across a planet that didn't even have communication between continents, is literally impossible, statistically impossible - if there's no factual basis that is. Think about that one for a bit. Pretty wild, right?

But I’m not sure what to tell you if the author purposefully avoids calling them a she/woman in the manga lol. That is probably a pretty deliberate choice. Bring it up to the author not me.
