Got a little heated at the ending there, I've cooled off now, but I'm curious as to what you guys think about this finale! Still absolutely adore the show <3

You shouldn't be surprised. This is exactly how Hotel del Luna played out. Koreans, unlike Westerners, have no illusions about life which is why the belief in reincarnation is so powerful in Asia. When the history of your country is endless cycles of poverty, oppression, mass famines, and war then perhaps hope only exists in another life. Medieval Europeans had exactly the same mindset, but their only hope for happiness was in the Christian heaven. When Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, it would never even have occurred to him to give them a happy ending. Koreans, like medieval Europeans, believe that life has iron cast rules that are set by a higher power which may be avoided for a time, but cannot be broken. Grim Reaper said his sin was taking his own life. To Catholics, taking your own life is a mortal sin and removes any chance of entering heaven because it defies the will of God. South Korea was a feudal culture until well after the Korean War, and a true democracy only since 1987. The traditional culture is still strong, with the hereditary nobility having been replaced with the hereditary chaebol families. North Korea is still a feudal society with a hereditary King. When you look at South Korean cities and people they appear the same as the West. They are not. They've built new modern cities out of the ashes of war and put on new Western clothes, but they still have one foot in Joseon and one foot in the modern world. That's a difficult duality to comprehend, but it is the key to understanding Koreans.

This series is in my top 5. You asked for our thoughts about the finale. Here's how I had to reconcile the ending in my weird brain. Firstly, I feel they needed to restart her life, otherwise she'd remain a miscellaneous omitted person subject to death on the 9's. I feel the purpose of his additional suffering was due to his interference that caused her to be miscellaneously omitted in the first place. And yes I see the irony of that because otherwise the goblin bride would not have been born, so in a way it was inevitable. As for the other pairing, I feel that they needed a fresh start without the memories because she was unable to forgive him and he was unable to forgive himself.

That's basically what I thought of the endings for both pairs.

Sylver Reacts

I have a much easier time with the Sunny and Wang Yeo pair, and at first I felt like Ji Eun Tak’s death doesn’t really mean anything if she remembers her past life in its entirety and he’s still immortal etc, but if you look at it as Kim Shin’s punishment for involving her in the first place then I can see that. It just feels weird as the viewer because it feels like the writers put them on pause for 30 years and then they just fall back right to where they were before without really changing anything. I didn’t really think about his punishment not being complete, but I can work with that. I think more than anything in terms of the cultural references of life, death, and rebirth, I was struggling with the narrative implications of the ending for the viewer, like what is the message that the writers wanted to convey to us by having her pass and I couldn’t come up with one. But I guess balancing the scales of justice by completing his punishment before they can have a happy end in the next life fits (even if Ji Eun Tak is kind of also punished in the process as a byproduct, but I guess that can be considered nature righting itself since she should have died as a baby)

I also viewed it as her resetting her fate. Being reborn legitimately, and not as a miscellaneously omitted who was never supposed to be born, her fate of her name coming up every 10yrs was erased and they could start afresh
