Thank you for reacting to this! A couple of thoughts and then I thought I'd share a bit of conversation that may simplify the ending. Which btw, you could definitely find hours of conversation about the ending. I think it is up to your own interpretation but that's just my 2 cents. Okay my favorite scene first. The reveal. *Spoilers* Not a portal but some sort of cosmic entity. Watch that part again. Doesn't it look like a miniature galaxy? A miniature sentient galaxy who's light years beyond our comprehension and can change reality to what it wants when it wants. The bear attack is my second favorite. As mentioned in the movie I think unfortunately Shepard and her final moments alive fused with the bear. Not pleasant. Not very pleasant at all. Okay here is a discussion about the ending that may make it make more sense, and like I said I'm sure if you google search "Annihilation ending" there's going to be tons more viewpoints of what happened. "That wasn't a "copy" of Lena, her cells had become refracted with everything else, including the Shimmer itself. Her cells broken down and shared with everything around her, which is why she picked up the tattoo. The Shimmer lives within her as well as whatever else she was refracted/shared with. The Shimmer breaks down your cells and shares them with everything else around it. Lena was still Lena, but her cells had been broken down and scrambled with everything else around her." think it's meant to be like that question about the ship… If you replace all of the parts of a ship, piece by piece, is it still the same ship? When she asks him, "Are you Kane," he says he doesn't think so. And when he ask her, "Are you Lena," the movie ends without the answer. So you can assume they're both just new versions of themselves. I just watched this again, and the scene of her drinking the water from the glass really settles this from me. The water on the edge splits in two. I think, entering the shimmer began the process of merging them with the genetics of everything else in the shimmer. Everybody was kind of in flux. It's like individual drops of water falling into a pond. They all become part of a single entity. Kane, going into the shimmer, had found out about his wife's affair and was in two minds about what to do. Part of him wanted to end, part wanted to go back to Lena. Upon reaching the Lighthouse, those two minds took separate forms. It wasn't a sentient entity controlling it, like Lena suggests. It was simply the impact point of the shimmer. When leader lady went all supernova, she wasn't in two minds about anything. She fully expected to be on this journey to her death. She had cancer, she knew her time was short and all she wanted was to get in there and find out what it was. All it did was reflect her subconscious, her ultimate destruction. With Lena, she realises very quickly it's reflecting her. It's fighting because she is fighting. But she's equally in two minds. She doesn't WANT to die. But, she knows if the shimmer spreads it will mean the death of everybody and everything as they know it. That is her point of splitting from the group, or in other words, her cellular division from the shimmer's genetic bank. The second she runs from the phosphorus grenade is the point she splits off from the puddle, becoming this "new" version of herself after splitting from the rest. The same is true for Kane but in reverse, Lena herself escaped but was changed, picking up traits from every piece of life in there including the tattoo. Kane's duplicate took a true duplicate form but was still left unsure of what and who he really was, and left the shimmer to find Lena. I like the implications of the Oroborus tattoo however, in that they are a self creating being. Kane had to be let out the Shimmer, nothing else was able to exit so why was he able to? Because he had to. He had to go find Lena, so she would go in and become this new life. Which means the Shimmer, whatever it's actual being is, was likely sent from the future or was a paradox of sorts, creating an Oroborus/Grandfather paradox scenario where they enter the shimmer to become anew, then go on to cause the shimmer to ensure their own creation. Honestly, very good movie with a lot of great thinking points. Great cinematography on it.
