You guys nailed it. The Fantastic Four are unique amongst the Marvel universe in that they were the first family of heroes and the whole world knows who they are, there are no secret identities when it comes to them. What a lot of people don't understand about them is they're scientists/explorers first and superheroes second; the mysteries of the world are what inspire them which is why they'd rather spend their time trying to figure out why things work the way they do. Them getting superpowers didn't change that aspect of who they are, but it did help accelerate their progress in experiencing things they probably never would have if they had stayed regular civilians. Their powers are a reflection of each of their personalities. Reed stretches himself too thin because he's constantly got a chip on his shoulder about protecting the world and his family; hence why he stretches, Sue feels unnoticed and unheard sometimes because she feels people don't take her seriously; so she turns invisible, Johnny's reckless and hot tempered; so he becomes fire. And lastly Ben is the muscle and protector of the family; their "rock" if you will so of course he became a rock man.
